Oh I don't take discussions on ancient 'what could've beens' seriously. I don't know enough about that part of the world to make a case anywhay

All our arguments here are pretty stupid. As an example: What era of knight are we talking about versus what era of samurai or versus what era of crowd of peasants?
Let's take pinnacles of each. For the knight a suit of Maximilian plate and a zweihander, for the samurai  O-Yoroi and a yari (since it goes better with the armour than a katana). Mobs of peasants are just mobs of peasants, no matter what period.

I don't see the yari doing much against the knight's armour. Nor katana, if you prefer it.

Modern-day mobs of peasant-equivalents sometimes carry semi-automatic pistols. One of those would probably give you a bit of an edge against any unit that has never seen gunpowder before. :P

I thought that peasant is a synonym for serf.

Note that I said "peasant-equivalents". Both poor people and manual laborers still exist. For purposes of military strategy, I guess you could generalize "peasant" to encompass absolutely everyone with no combat training.

In that case let's use tanks as knight-equivalents, since they're both shock troops.

Where did this discussion end up?

Oh that's right. In another debate between nerds who's knowledge of the subject begins and ends with Total War and C&C.

Gosh, this'll definitely lead to some meaningful discussion, as both sides clearly know what they're talking about.

We heard that just fine the first time, thank you very much. It's still not any less fun.

Tanks aren't shock troops, they're tanks and a potent part of the tank/mech infantry/SP artillery/SP AA quad-fecta of modern offensive land warfare.

Anyway a knight is going to beat a samurai because of the armor. Even chainmail is effective against slashing draw cuts from a katana. Although I'm not sure why the knight is even getting off his horse. Samurai weren't big horsemen, were they? I seem to recall some bizzare law banning all but 500 from riding horses or somesuch. Around the time they banned the wheel.
