I just learned that my iPod Touch makes a great comic reader, and decided to start reading these (digital) magazines more avidly. I'm currently reading through Moore's Watchmen series, and oh god is it great. Combination of incredible art and great writing go together very very well.

What do you guys think about comics, which do/did you read, what did you think about them, and what do recommend? (Manga included)

Dunno if you can find it in English, but Italians have some damn good comics. I recommend Zagor, Dylan Dog, Nathan Never and Alan Ford.

I've always wanted to learn Italian, have my family speaks it, and there a few who don't speak any other language. Are you Zagor wasn't translated through? It seems to have quite a few English-speaking followers.

Watchmen is great, its by Alan Moore, and so is League. I'm guessing its just as good, gonna add that to my must-read list. Y: the Last Man looks pretty cool.

No clue, I read it in Croatian. Italian comics are the most popular 'round these parts, but I've never seen them mentioned on English-speaking forums. Marvel is considered to be kiddy stuff by most comic readers over here, though I am a fan of Spiderman.

Sandman is indeed excellent. As is everything written by Neil Gaiman.

Of other American comics, I'd recommend Frank Miller's Sin City. It just oozes style and badassery.
You must've seen or at least heard of the movie based on this - the comic book has got some additional story arcs, not included in the film, so it's worth checking out.

The Dark Knight Returns(Miller again), is surprisingly good for a superhero story. It's about the middle-aged Batman, and it's really better than it sounds.

The sequel wasn't really good, though.

If you care for Japanese comics, i.e.manga, then go ahead and try the classic Akira.
Blame! is great as well, but my all time favourite is Miyazaki's Nausicaa.

Then there are European comics, which are quite different in style from the American ones.
Belgium is the country producing the most titles, followed maybe by France and Italy. This means that most of the stuff gets released in French, and translations are not as easy to come by as with e.g. manga.
I know that Thorgal (by Rosinski & Van Hamme) is getting translated. Currently half of the series has been published in Britain, if I remember correctly. Definitely worth checking out, if you can get it.

If you can handle some disturbing stuff, check out Druuna by Paolo E.Serpieri. It's an erotic fantasy/sf comic book(eh, those Italians). It appears at first to be just some sort of porn comic, but soon it turns out to be much more than that.

Israelis think the same. Mature themes in comics always make them better, way better. Don't get me wrong though, if you give me an old Spiderman comic I'd happily read it, but I wouldn't enjoy it as much as this Watchmen stuff (Which by the way, is incredible). You don't see many Marvel comics made with a mature audience in mind, which is quite a bad thing (There was this Wolverine one a while ago, set in some apocalyptic America or something, it looked great).

I didn't think League was quite as great as Watchman, but close. Also, the third volume of League is really strange. Even strange for Alan Moore. And it came with 3D glasses.

Il Palazzo's recommendation of Akira is a good one, total classic. Super long though.

This topic makes me want to start buying comics again.

I just read The Dark Knight Returns, and it was good, and then i read The Dark Knight Returns Again, and it was insane.

I had no idea what was going on.

Fables is pretty amazing. I don't know if there are any more of them after the initial comics though, or what order to read them in.

FALSE EDIT: Turns out there ARE comics after the initial 50 I read. Beautiful.

EDIT: As long as you don't mind / agree with the author's pro-Israeli viewpoints, of course. They're not overbearing, but they're obviously there - mainly in the way one of the Fables tells the big bad to go fuck himself after doing what's basically a terrorist / guerilla attack.

EDIT EDIT: OH, and Jack Horner is an amazing bad arse. He's just crazy.
