I HATE the military. Just thought I'd say.
« on: June 02, 2010, 04:36:34 pm »

Every other aspect of this great game I can understand, I can CONTROL. But the military, the military; I don't know how to to get them to do things, I don't know what half the things on the m menu mean, I don't know how to see what they're doing, I don't know how to tell them to do stuff I can't see if they're doing it.

I HATE it.
/end ineloquent of rant.

So if anyone could explain... :P

There is already a bunch of "don't understand military"-threads. Go there.

There's also many (many!) pages on the wiki dedicated to explaining the military in terms of both what keys to press to get it to work and what things actually mean so you can wrap your head around it. There are still numerous bugs, yes, but you should have little trouble getting your military to train in the equipment you want and going where you want them to go.

The military is working. There are a few bugs, mostly having to do with:

1) Not checking if they should or should not be wearing something.
2) Group training does not work.
3) Dwarves doing individual training get stuck and will never do civilian jobs ever again.
4) Dead dwarves are not removed from squads automatically.

Thats pretty much the bug list for military dwarves. If you can work around these the military is quite powerful and extremely flexible.

Yea. I've had no issue with setting up a quick and dirty squad of wrestlers to take care of the stray insane dorf.

Its just has more steps to get to the same points but with better end results.

So basically, set up a uniform with stuff you want them to wear, assign a militia captain (noble screen), assign a squad under them, go into the schedule and remove the 'train' orders (IMPORTANT, no order makes them actually train), be sure you have an arsenal dorf to assign them stuff, be sure you have a barracks assigned by an armor and weapon rack (might help?) with your squad set to train and equipment there, order them around with (s) menu.

It'd be nice to get a checklist for making a squad. Would this be right?

1. Define the uniform.
2. Assign squad captain.
3. Assign the defined uniform to the squad.
4. Remove train orders from schedule.
5. Assign barracks and the barracks' weapon and armor racks to individual equipment.

Any suggestions for marksdwarves? I've heard the targeting ranges are buggy. Though I suppose you could just train them faster by releasing captives in safe places to fire at, since moving targets provide more experience.

Military has not given me any issues.

I have 30 Axe Dwarfs all on inactive duty all the time.

I dont do kill orders, but i do set them into position to kill stuff.

They have worked pretty fine thus far doing this.

I was thinking more along the lines of this legendary champion, all clad in dented and dinged up steel plate, his blood-drenched axe slung over his back, a notch in the handle for every enemy that saw the swing of that blade as the last sight they ever saw, a battered shield strapped over his arm... and a fluffy, pink stuffed hippo hidden discretely in his breastplate.

There's a lot more than that.
Primarily, most of the weapons just don't work correctly.

Dwarven weapons all work fine. other than crossbows.
I've not tried foreign weapons though.

I suspect some of the equipping issues are caused by not enough organization and book skills on the arsenal dwarf.
I think this may be the same problem with group training also.

Oh you can get them to train at archery targets, but good luck getting them to actually shoot a real target. To do the former, don't bin your ammo as that screws up ammo assigning.

I've had success getting my marksdwarves to shoot at live targets, but it's a bit random. They'll stand there a while and then suddenly fire off like three bolts and then continue standing around. You can't rely on them, but they can help out every now and then.

I find that when I first start a squad I can give them kill orders, after a while though that doesn't work so I resort to stationing. the trouble is after a year or two, that breaks down too so it is now impossible to get the dwarves to leave their barracks.

To send the first squad of your military to a location is s - a - m. To order a kill is s - a - k. To cancel a movement or kill order, from the main paused screen (not the squad screen), it's m - c. To toggle your military from Inactive to Active\Training, it's s - a - t. Note that the "s" screen is persistent and can be paused and unpaused.

If your dwarves have an active move or kill order, they will put on their uniform and go get busy. Don't forget to set up a barracks with some boxes\bags\armor\weapon storage and beds so they can train.
