Human Database
« on: June 02, 2010, 12:13:56 am »

I was wondering if there are any theories out there that involve having a huge amount of storage space in the near future for people to optionally put autobiography's of themselves online that would remain personal until after their death. It could be started while in elementary school and built upon over the years. People do it already with sites like Myspace and Facebook. One of the great fears of mankind is to be forgotten after you die. If you can store and edit your private thoughts through out your life and release it upon death, it may make people slightly happier as they die. It's arguably one of the greatest motivators of ancient monument builders. What if a group of people managed through technological advances create enough digital space to be able to contain a sort of wikipedia of humans for future generations to look back upon after their death.

It's kind of what the internet is doing right now, but this wouldn't be deleted ever due to not having funds. In a best case scenario it would be free and everyone could tap into it. Obviously not possible now, but maybe in 100 years?

Theoretically this could lead to putting your DNA on display which leads down a dark, dark road of moral quandary which defy historical examples.

Or you could just write a journal or diary.

That's what I'm suggesting, but with computers. You'd even save the trees.

And then the CIA comes and rewrites everyone's entries to include undying patriotism and proof of taxes. Good idea though, ancestry.com is somewhat similar

You can do this. Congratulations.

Although I wouldn't mind putting my DNA and a brainscan onto a computer before I die.

This also lacks the ability of being remembered forever. How many girls from the 80s who wrote in their journal everyday do we remember now? Besides Betty Cooper.

Granted, nobody is going to browse through hundreds of thousands of these and zero in on that teenage girl anyways. They probably wouldn't be all that impressed even if they did.

Incidentally, putting your DNA up on a humanwiki won't benefit you in any way. Do you think in a hundred years, somebody will use your DNA to bring you back to life? It doesn't work that way, they'll just pop a new person who's exactly like the old one. You'll still be dead.

Okay, so, today this girl I know-Lauren, just took a sudden dis-interest in talking to me. Is she just on her period or something?

I believe that would also apply to being 'teleported' or what most consider time travel. You'd cease to exist and another entity would go about, never knowing he was just created...

Yeah, like I said it has no parallel in our history. Should we consider clones to be like our children or descendants for example or such, who owns the rights to DNA published in such a way, what if they screw up and make a race of mutants/supermen from our DNA, who owns it in that case, are clones people, how many clones do we make, etc.

As for still being dead, yeah, can't change that.

Heh, people have been rewriting their own history all the time. No surprise that some of the most famous people in history were the ones who knew how to write.

I don't really care so much about people remembering me. If you want to be remembered, do it the classic way - do something epic, and have the journalist kids write biographies about you.

I kinda like the idea of a genetic database, store and collect DNA from everyone, so reasearchers can more easily find those genes that cause problems, or find the best genes for intellect and health, to create, well perfect people.

Ok, so we store our DNA so a homogenous future race can laugh at your recessive genes and genetic diseases?

Awesome.

Future people are assholes.

Future people don't have assholes. The concept is foreign to them because they have manipulated their digestive tract to be perfect and leave no waste.
