I don't take prisoners just to kill them. I display my prisoners in cages for would-be attackers. And just as some lively decor.

So far I've done done execution by firing squad, execution tower, and a drop into magma.

Combination. Drowning chamber before capture, then either as animal food or training aids for military or execution for incompetents. Haven't tried starving one or throwing them into the caverns yet. Cages atomsmashed when sufficiently frustrated.

I am with DarthCloakedDwarf there - I don't have a military, but I have traps with giant axe blades. Why should I bother with scared dwarves if I simply can get my goblins sliced and diced at the front gate?

It depends on the nature of the prisoner. Goblins are tossed in the volcano or magma pit, except for the leaders. They rot in cages decorating the offices and throne rooms of my nobles. Evil dwarves that come with the goblins are tossed naked into the dog pit, as a message to all the traitorous bastards. Humans get to participate in live fire exercises for my marksdwarves or take on whatever horrific wild beasts I've captured. Elves get the repeating-floor-spike pit.

In one fort I was fortunate enough to embark on a cave that was home to a minotaur. I was able to isolate him in the lower levels of the cave, and he became my official executioner. Good times.

I tried the French Revolution artillery range for the lols against a single goblin lasher, but gave up after about 20 ballista arrows and dozens of rocks produced exactly two injured fingers.  Then sent in my steel-equipped swordsdwarves with wardog escort, which resulted in about three pages of injuries...in the dorfs, plus dog puke everywhere.    Finally sent in my spear/axe posse, which after a fight sufficiently long to make two of them elite finally yielded goblin gibs.

If I hadn't turned invaders off I'd probably use a drowning chamber.  On the plus side, I've now got two elite speardwarves for dealing with any underground nasties.

Most efficient is i strip em, then pit em into a channel (with ramp) with my military stationed around it.  Was drowning them but it was taking too long.

There's something about selling them into slavery that appeals to me. Yeah sure, sometimes there are accidents, but that's the cost of doing business.

I usually like to make prisioners fight in an arena, gives my dwarves experience and is always fun to watch. I also have a drowning chamber for when i'm don't have enough time for the arena.

For dwarves, I just lock them in their room until they dehydrate. For any other captured beasts, I usually just drown them. I can't wait for steam to do damage again so I can make a giant chamber for scalding my prisoners to death.

Im planning on building a giant pit about 50 z-levels down, then making a building like this:

Basically its a small cage-type thing suspended above a giant pit. The first level is 9 tastefully arranged goblin cages, with a floor level above filled with magma. When it hits the bottom of the pit, which will have a nice full pond of water, it will smash the whole cage against the bottom into nice stone blocks, and the gobbies will be crushed to death, which the magma will then fill the whole chamber, turning into obsidian with the water. Then i open the door to get in, dig out the obsidian, collect my rewards (Iron supplies, stone blocks, etc.)Then refill pit and remake cage, and redo. BONUS:Make cage out of glass, so they get to see their death before they meet it. SUPER BONUS:Add a window by glass cage on pit wall to a room, put a lever in the room with a tantruming dwarf, and they now get to watch as their fate is in the hands of a tantruming dwarf.
