A combination: Deep deep pit down to the HFS by way of removing semi-molten rock. I actually plan to have a grid of hatches in my courtyard to dump them without even needing to capture them. Also works on unruly nobles 1/9th of the time. I'm evil, I have an image to stick to.

A small, constructed pit, filled with lever attached spike traps, each with 10 masterwork adamantine menacing spikes (yes, I cheated to get the adamantine). Then again, that was in 40d, when piercing weapons were overly effective and adamantine in a weapon made it uber. I just drop them into the volcano now.

I end up letting them sit until my animal stockpile fills up, then I build a zoo.  usually with some failsafe involving magma that I never get to use because I don't have enough mechanisms :(

Down a pit, but this pit usually includes one or more caverns because you get less work for more splat ;).

Killing nobles, elves, and very unfortunate prisoners is my favorite DF past time. My favorite is to trap door them into a pit of carp, tigers, or cougars. That way you can read the facinatingly morbid combat log. I just found the circus metal, so I will have a few more lion chow bags dressed in purple robes soon.   :)

Doubles as a zoo while while the mechanic preps the cages. Don't let the kiddies get attached.

Well my actual way of killing dwarves...
I just honestly like making them as miserable as possible before they snap. They always do, of course.
I just haven't quite yet found that little barrier that makes them go from miserable to insane.

A room with a drawbridge that goes up and then comes down. It's clean and it's simple. No corpses, no leftover items that would distract your haulers.

In my last 40d fort I had 50 cage traps at my entrance so I had a lot of prisoners (more than 200). My plan was to release them all simultaneously in a massive arena with my archers on the walls and a dragon in the middle. But I never finished linking all the cages with mechanisms. 0.31 was released and I haven't gone back to finish the project.

I'm not sure what you mean by prisoner.

If you mean an incarcerated dwarf: why would I want him/her to die?

If I'm supposed to take gobbos prisoner... well... large serrated discs tend to render that point moot.
