All of these can be modded in as castes of the bronze colossus, and the [POP_RATIO:] tag to set rarity.

I mentioned this earlier, also I asked somone to compare iron man to bronze colossus in arena but noone did.

I've done this. The BC utterly wiped the floor with an army of iron men. Took on 20 of them at the same time and slaughtered them all within seconds.

Yeah, BC vs. FeMan was one of the first battles I made in the arena, my results were the same.

  I've been having a great deal of fun since I started really messing with bridges.  I have yet to run into anything that I can't crush to death under one.  I haven't run into any truly tough critters yet though - is there a chance a creature of sufficient toughness might survive a bridge dropping on it's head, or is it considered instant destruction for anything on the same z level as the bridge when it is lowered?

Maybe there should be different types of bronze colossi instead of just the humanoid versions. Imagine being attacked by a bronze polar bear colossus or (Armok forbid) a bronze carp colossus.

I believe atom-smashing (lowering a bridge on a creature) does not work vs Building Destroyers.

You need 5, very specific, fetishes just to make it bearable. 10 if you're shooting for pleasurable.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.

Well, even though iron is in theory more durable for weapons, in terms of relatively homogeneous amorphous forms like humanoidish bodies, a huge mass of bronze would have a massive advantage over a comparatively small amount of iron, unless the iron men moved quite a lot faster AND had some means of inflicting damage other than techniqueless bludgeoning. So I'd say, expect iron men to get wtfpwnd.

In RL, they're almost similar in quality and stuff, but it makes sense in a game to put bronze at a better quality than iron just for the reason that bronze bars are slightly, but still more difficult to make than iron ones. These aren't just sheer speculation from metagaming, as the raws for bronze have values in shear, torsion, etc. that are better (higher in some cases, lower in others) than those for iron.

EDIT: I looked up the values and such, and the only two categories that iron beats bronze in out of about 8 are shear elasticity (supposedly used in cutting calculations along with the other two shear values) and value (which isn't important in combat to be honest) If you want to be better than bronze, you use steel or adamantine. If you would like, you could use bismuth bronze, which is identical to bronze combatwise, and just has slight more material value (6 over bronze's 5).

You'll be glad to know that silver is still a sack of fail. It makes the best blunt weapons, but blunt weapons are nothing special currently. If you could make a blunt weapon out of platinum, that'd be very excellent though, having double the density of silver.

It all depends on what Toady considers "iron" and/or where he got his numbers.  There have been so many different classifiable grades and types of iron that humans have made...  Now imagine how many different types dwarves would have made, lol.

Some iron really is crap for weapons compared to some bronze.  Then again, some iron is really just short of steel, and outperforms bronze in almost all ways.

Adamantine colossus = sweet idea!

I'd like to think of such things as these colossi as perhaps god-created beings or avatars of the gods themselves perhaps once placed upon the world to take care of HFS back in the days of yore.  That's just what I think would be neat.  It would make sense, in that case, for an adamantine colossus to be near indestructible, or indestructible with any dwarven tech, or something.   Perhaps their purpose could be procedurally generated like the rest of history in the game... >.> 

Also, I hope people don't have the idea that warhammers are supposed to be heavy IRL.  They were made out of iron, copper, bronze, etc. and weighed, in general for single handed ones, no more than 5 pounds.  Lead and platinum would be crummy as they would a.) deform readily, making the weapon useless after striking (I know durability isn't in the game...), and b.) if made identical in design to IRL ones would be too heavy to be wieldly.  I mean, density is an important factor up to a point (i.e. styrofoam is not a good material for hammers, nor would adamantine for that matter), but a hammer should not weigh more than about five pounds, regardless of material, otherwise it would be too slow of a weapon and thus easily countered.  There is absolutely no advantage to using lead or platinum or anything more dense than iron as a material for a warhammer unless said materials are more economical and/or have a structural advantage.  This most certainly should be reflected in this game. 

As for an adamantine colossus, I'd say it being a sharp and fast machine of slashing death would make sense and be hella-awesome.     

For the record, I am all for some indestructible or near indestructible mega-beasts, at least at a later date when armies and combat are worked out better.  I think ballistae and catapults should be able to knock down and physically move an adamantine collosus, but they probably shouldn't really damage it much.  Bronze collosi should be tanks, hardly affected by all but the most lucky of siege weapon shots.  I think anything short of a well-placed hellfire missile (or fluffy wambler) to a vulnerable joint shouldn't kill it right off.  At least that would fit my vision of them being god-created beings...
