Realistically though, it would be an extremely last ditch chance after every other possible option fails and a wildcard with unpredictable PR results.

Its still a fun idea to think about.

Naw, the last-ditch effort is to distract everybody while you just wait for the well to run dry.

BP has apparently been stuck in that last ditch since around Week 2.  The "Top Kill" plan having failed, now they're going for "cut part of the pipe off and stick another pipe in it" again.  What is this now, Plan G?

Lol.

You do know that it will take years for the oil deposit to reach pressure equilibrium or run dry? And yes I know you're being sarcastic.

Not counting the relief wells, which won't reach the blowout until August, I think its like Plan E or F.

Oh yea, BPs stock is reportedly plummeting like a rock, no surprise there.....

At this point in time, its down about 40% since this mess began. It was at about $60 a share in April; today its at $36. It gets much lower and stuff will start hitting the fan in a big way.

BP's too big to fail. Wait for a good time and buy, my friends.

In related news: Attorny General Eric Holder opens criminal investigation into the deaths of 11 workers on the oil rig.  With federal scale negligent management lawsuits now on the table, five'll get'ya ten that criminal investigations into safety standard failures will be very close behind.

Because everything is better with pictures...

Operation 'stick a balloon in it'

Note that you get the fun and excitement of the pressure shooting a balloon-laden spear into whoever was on the surface...

I don't quite get the last bit on the bottom right.

Anyways, yea, sounds like a viable idea, if the blowout preventer wasn't in the way.

I have a brilliant idea!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Except on the water, and have some douchebag who made it big about 20 years ago show up and do a guest appearance!

This actually isn't that far fetched.  We use this when fracturing a well, to seal off the areas we don't want to fracture.  Put one balloon (filled with HEAVY fluid) below and one above, then pump frac fluid into the interstice.

It'd be all but impossible to get a drill string back down in the hole though.
