Designation (mining mainly) Templates
« on: May 09, 2010, 04:34:09 pm »

The stencil kind, not the programming kind  ;D

So basically, doing designations accross 100 zlevels is getting to be a real pain, and sometimes you just want to do the same thing over and over again.  Or perhaps you want the same apartment complex you had in your last fortress.

So, how about allowing you to save a given pattern of mining designations?  You would go into a "template" mode, where you'd be given a plane to work with, and you'd make designations on it.  You could then save it and it'd go to a file, call it what you want, and then use it on a whim.  When you want to use it in a game, you simply would press designation, use template, pick the list of the one you want, and bam you'd have your entire apartment complex you like with one click.  This could be very convenient as well if you wanted circular rooms: you could just save a few different size circular rooms and make them wherever you want.

I think this sort of thing is better served using macros (which are already in the 40d branch and upcoming version).

But a built in template saving option would be a lot easier on the player. Thus why he suggests it.
