A performance question
« on: May 02, 2010, 03:37:45 pm »

I have a quad core processor running at about 1.9 ghz per core, at what point will my fortress start lagging badly? (In terms of dwarfs, and yes I'm using a tile set, but I'm trying to ween myself off of it.)

Just after the game begins to require the entirety of one core.

You mean that right after I embark? Because I'm doing fine right now.

it depends on a lot of things
like the biome you embark in, for example

Alright... Will it be able to use all 4 cores?

No. DF is single threaded. It can only use one.

Ahh... Dangit. Stupid fancy quad core. Worthless when it comes to DF :C

Thanks for the help regardless.

He was pointing out that the game will only use one core, because it is not multi-threaded. Quad core will help slightly because DF gets a whole core to itself, but that's the limit.

Why not just try it and see? Number of dwarves is less of an issue than number of objects (like stones) and moving fluids (like water). There are things you can do to deal with these, like disposing of excess items with an atom smasher and building dams.

I personally don't mind the slowdown of larger forts because there's usually more to manage anyway and it gives you a bit more time to think, but it depends on how complex your designs are:

As an experiment I dug a 4x4 vertical shaft to connect the first cavern layer... to the sea. The flooding was fun to watch, but put my FPS somewhere less than 1. My conclusion was: do not try that again.

You can run three instances of DF without too much strain on everything else.

I prefer dungeon crawl, but nethack is quite similar (in that it's a dungeon-based roguelike) - it's worth trying.
