There's lots, a big one I just found is if you have a task that hauls them, like milking, but they were doing a job when someone came up and hauled them off to be milked, they sort of break.  One of the drones was fishing (I 'PLAY NOW!'ed so random labours were chosen), and someone came over and took it off to the workshop to be milked.  It was milked successfully, but then stood there standing where it had been placed performing 'fish', no where near the water.  I tried causing a cave in on its head, but that just pushed him a few tiles where he continued to 'fish'.

I know some ppl have gone farther with this idea than I have, any thoughts?

Do you mean to say that you have caused strange behaviors by making a civilisation out of a race without [INTELLIGENT] tags?

Yeah I would suggest not milking them.

There will also be problems with them dropping equipement, breeding, hauling and drinking. I keep trying to solve those, but no luck so far.

Best thing I managed so far is to use PET_EXOTIC, allowing me to choose their labours, and to give them NO_GENDER to keep them from spawning babies that just die from dehydration (or go stark raving mad, hehehe). The former tag makes them unbutcherable though.

..... did you go create a little race of subservient milkable slaves that are intelligent enough to go fish and do random little jobs, and, this is the part that i get hung up on, you wanted them to be milkable? milkable!? as in, "oh here, have this +clear glass goblet+ of delicious fresh kobold slave milk, i got it from the little guy who cleans my house and does my laundry. yeah, i just picked him up while he was out fishing, carried him to the farmers workship and filled a barrel or two just this morning, try some, its still warm. seems to have messed with his head a little though..."

because, you know, i dont think toady could have ever thought of that one and coded for it. i would not have thought anybody would have, except you went and did. congratulations. you are a scary scary person. have a cookie.


EDIT EDIT OMG EDIT: its a SUBCASTE and not a different race to the parent civ? eeeehhh. your not milking slaves, your milking the retardo demented children of your people. and reading grimlockes post is even worse. of course! the mentally subnormal ones cannot take care of their own offspring. sounds like you should just go the full mile and mod in a surgical bench where you can sterilize them all, rather then having the oddness of the no gender tags. bear in mind i consider all of this awesome, just quite horribly and uniquely insane.

Max, no I'm making a cannibal race with superintelligent females (1 in 8 ), intelligent superstrong male warlords (1 in 8 ), and unintelligent, milkable, butcherable, very strong but stooopid drones to be used as a combination slave labor/food source/military fodder. 

Grimlocke, PET_EXOTIC let you choose their labours??  The problem I'm having is that in order to be milkable, they can't have CAN_LEARN.  Since not having CAN_LEARN prevents them from skilling up in any way I assumed it was also what was preventing them from displaying labors.  I'll go test it.  To make them not spawn babies, just don't give them the [FEMALE] tag.  Why would PET_EXOTIC make them unbutcherable?  Aren't exotic pets butcherable?

EDIT:  I am loathe to give them the PET_EXOTIC tag atm because the Dungeon Master never shows up at any of my forts,  but I'll test it.

The drones seem to otherwise work fine.  They do whatever labors they have enabled properly.  I had some trouble with hauling until I figured out the [PACK_ANIMAL] tag breaks hauling.  I've seen them mine, chop wood, stonecraft, carpenter, and fish.  They're wearing clothes properly.  It's just that you can't set their labors without dwarf therapist, and they don't ever skill up (which is fine I guess, they're sposed to be pretty stupid).  One other thing that didn't work, a drone with the Milker labor enabled would go to the workshop and try to milk itself lol.  It didn't work. 

My entity positions are messed up, so I can't do any military stuff yet, so I haven't tested that to see if it works.

Can you post your creature and Entity raws? I'd love to try out your mod in my own fort and see what I can do myself.

#2 I've actually made lots and lots of little changes throughout the raws, they're interdependant, and I don't remember what they all are. 
I'll post a neutered sketch of the creature with all the interdependent bits missing in a minute, but no guarantees it'll work for you. 


My original goal was to have this race come at me in in ambushes and sieges with a combination of normal fighters and drones, capture some drones, and tame them.  But it turns out you can't ever tame CIV creatures.  :(  I just made them civ_controllable to work the bugs.  Next I'm going to try to make them (the drones) COMMON_DOMESTIC and see if immigrants bring some along.


I tested it and PET_EXOTIC does not let you choose labors.  CAN_LEARN lets your choose labors, and it also makes them unmilkable.  PET_EXOTIC also doesn't prevent butchering.

I'm not sure where your raws differ from mine then, because I still haven't found out how to Purchase subservient Civ members at Embark in my own mod without making it so that I can assign them no labors other than Slaughtering them. I'd been working on a Slavery mod of my own in 40D and got it mostly complete, but for some reason the change to DF2010 made my former mods unworkable due to the changes in the Creature Tokens.

Here's a watered down version of the creature.  I had given them unique bodyparts that you don't have, so I had to take those out and stuff.  But I haven't changed anything functional.  My entity defs are just a copy of the kobold defs with some stuff from dwarves copied over.  I played around with ethics a little bit I think.

I'm having a similar problem.  No matter what I do, I can't seem to get the subcaste to be purchaseable at embark.  This might be because the civ is wiped out in the world gen raws I'm editing.  Butcherable and milkable will not work if the creature CAN_LEARN.  Can learn also enables labors.  I don't know what, if any, effect it has on the embark options because its not documented, and I have yet to get it to work.

Also, I seem to only be able to choose trolls as pets at embark and I have no idea why.  I have the [USE_ANY_PET_RACE] in my entity, why can't I have cows and whatnot?  I see that trolls are EVIL and subterranean, so that jives with [USE_CAVE_ANIMALS][USE_EVIL_ANIMALS].  But why aren't common domestic creatures available?  Is it because the civ's destroyed?

if you purchase more drones at embark, they are called '(Stray) Peasants,' have no name, and cannot perform any jobs.  They're treated as animals in the purest sense.  (This is with no CAN_LEARN).  That's fine, its pretty much what I was going for.  It means if other races have captured or tame drones, they won't go around hauling things.  This is probably also the differentation between the babies dying of thirst or not.  Think about it, puppies don't die of thirst.  Its because they're (stray) animals.

Hoho, sounds like a chalenge. Theres no way to surgically mutilate dwarves that I know of though. Oh well butchering them and sacrificing them to the gods is probabaly plenty more evil.

can_learn never made a difference in them being butcherable in my modding expiriments. Maybe its because I did use the can_speak at the same time.
I removed the can_learn tag because its a bother. Migrants show up with all sorts of unwanted labours. It also results in the inevitable 'stray dungeon master' and 'stray mayor'.

You also dont need a dungeon master for pet_exotic pets being usable. Just give them common_domestic and you can trade for them and embark with them. Migrants arrive 'tamed'. No need for the

Also, the labour screen excludes the butcher screen, and vica versa. It also seems to make Z-menu buthering impossible. You have to train your slave dwarves into 'war annimals' for them to be butcherable again.

I think you should be able to milk them if you turn off problematic labours. Though I havnt tested that, with my slave dwarves being genderless and all.


Aaaaand... you drones/slaves are mounts? And even the males are milkable... your mod is creepy in a rather different way than mine.

I'm positive that CAN_LEARN prevents milking.  Toady said so specifically.  If you've experimented and found differently, you should report it on this board in its own thread because its a significant find.

I'm not certain about butchering.  I just assumed the relationships were the same.

You are not having migrants arriving tamed.  By adding the COMMON_DOMESTIC tag to the creature, you have added it to the pool of creatures than can tag along with your migrants when they arrive.  Like how cows and horses and whatnot come with migrants?  Same thing.  They're not migrants, they're pets.  I added that tag because the drones don't breed by themselves and I wanted the dwarves to have lots of access to them.

I don't really see what the mount tag accomplishes, I haven't seen any mounted sieges yet in this version, so I through it on there for kicks hoping something interesting might happen.

The race is very aggressive, and tend to get themselves annihilated rather easily in world gen even though they're very strong.  This was exacerbated by the fact that only 1/4 of the population participates in breeding.  So I gave them litters of up to 6, increased the life span of the female by alot, and made the drones male so they could participate in the breeding population.  I couldn't do it the other way around and make the drones female because of the starving baby problem.

All the drones are, therefore, technically male.  And only the drones are milkable.   Its not as if they have naughty bits, so who cares.  Although, that can be corrected!

IDK its all fine and well to say that, but as a programmer, I know it can be difficult to get things to work they way you want without the odd dirty hack here and there.  He probably left it like this specifically to prevent situations like the "fishing drone getting hauled off to be milked and breaking" I mentioned in the first post.  Obviously that put the creature in an unspecified state.  Rather that trying to define that state, toady may have just decided to try to prevent it from ever happening.
