Text Editors
« on: April 28, 2010, 12:15:48 am »

Maybe you guys can help me. I'm looking for a plain text editor with a dark background or changeable background. I ask this because I use notepad at night in a darkroom and wish to reduce eyestrain (I write posts for my X-Com LP in notepad)

Also, use this thread to discuss your favorite plain text editor.

I normally use TextEdit on mac.
Pimped out version of Wordpad on Windows.
For Windows, nothing beats Notepad++.

I know it's unrealistic, but I can't help but imagine little bearded babies for dwarves. In my mind, they come out of the womb fully bearded. That's how the mother carries them around, too, she just drags them around by the beard or ties it to her belt. When the father's on duty, he just ties their beards together and the baby just kind of hangs there, swinging to and fro with Urist McDaddy's movements.

I'm pretty sure you can change the page color in MS Word. Though that is the uber muscle of text editors.

Word is bothersome.
It works too well, but not well enough, just to the point where it gets in the way and is incredibly frustrating.

I generally do most of texting in simpletext. Though for things that need some heavy formatting, or conistiant formating for long things I bust it out. Recently its been used to only keep my resume pretty, then I convert into a pdf file.

edit: Its main detractor for me is that the latest version is a resource whore.

I would probably use it less if googledoc actually stopped hem and hawing on being a simple text editor to a full fledge word processor. Even indenting in that that thing a pain in the ass.

Oh, does anybody know if you can change the background on google docs?

the problem with MS Word is that it is not a plain text editor, it is a word processor. I don't want to be able to indent, or change font color or italicize or any of that stuff because that is handled through code tags here on B12. A word processor inserts hidden characters to handle all that formatting stuff which when put into another system like the forums here, is completely different.

A plain text editor doesn't add any hidden symbols or code, at the expense (non-issue here) of not being able to format your work.

-edit: I'll give notepad++ a try, see how that is.

I used TextPad, which is non-free but very nice editor or Notepad++, which is free and also very nice, on windows and vim on everything else (mac & linux).

Notepad++ pwns everything, including vim :P

Um, you could just lower the brightness for your monitor at night? That's what I do for late night typing. I think Notepad++ does allow changing colors, but don't know where the setting for it is.

The brightness is fine, it allows me to see my keyboard and desktop which is not backlit (only source of light is monitor). I just want to reduce the amount of white on my screen at any one time.
