Metal Flask Bug?
« on: April 26, 2010, 07:22:44 pm »

My mayor just mandated that I make 3 Black Bronze items. I only have one black bronze bar, and I don't plan on wasting fuel and metal to make any more, so I was going to make 3 flasks.

However, the wiki says that all metal flasks, due to a bug, turn out to be iron? Will the mayor accept these supposed to be black bronze flasks as what they should be? Does fulfilling the mandate get counted when the job that should fulfill it is completed, or when the dwarf logs that the correct object has be created?

Unless someone has tried this and knows, I'm going to go ahead and try it, for science.

Yes, the flasks always seem to turn out iron. I'm not sure if it counts to the mandate though, but the end result will probably be iron.

Yeah, the smelting reaction used up my Black Bronze and produced iron flasks, as I expected, but it did not count a fulfilling the mandate   :-\

I guess I'll just make 3 black bronze bars and make statues or something.

I queued up making a single reaction of black bronze, which make 4 black bronze bars.

And apparently that counts as "making 3 black bronze items".

I guess black bronze bars are items...and black bronze.

For future reference though, I guess I learned something useful. Now whenever my nobles or whoever demands that I make iron items or iron flasks, I can just request my dwarves make flasks from something less valuable than iron, and it'll still count, since the end product will be iron flasks (and more importantly count as such for the purposes of mandates, which is what I learned from this venture), regardless of if I use lead or nickle or something less valuable, useful, and more common than iron.

Yeah, making bars counts. In fact, it's the only way to fulfill some mandates like Bismuth or Pig Iron items without modifying the raws.

Far as the bug goes, the obvious solution is to start embarking with vast amounts of a cheap metal like garnierite and forging iron flasks with the nickel you smelt from it.

You can't make bolts out of black bronze.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Really?  I've made gold flasks and green glass vials.  Is it only some kinds of metal?

I just got a bunch of gold flasks by asking for copper, so... Hooray for the magic forge!
