There is a happy ending possible with the Gaulish character (actually a couple, but only one is really a fully happy ending for you and a happy-ish ending for the Gaul). You have to both have the right stats and make the right choice to get it, though.
how are there several good ending and we can't find them?! argh!

Choice of the Chrysallid.

I was like, ha, this looks like a pretty dumb and boring game. I was so wrong. Gentlemen, I have discovered true fun.

Do you pursue the Civilian, assault the unarmored rookie X-com Soldier, or assault the officer in the flight suit?

Trick question, it's all three in their time (though the flight suit guy will of course go into the air like a wussy that doesn't want to be a zombie).

Each mission it seems to be possible to be promoted twice.

what? how? (or do you mean in X-com? because I thought that wasn't true either?)

(well I guess I know how to get promoted twice in the first mission- you need a cunning plan (and of course for a cunning plan, you need cunning). but in most of the chapters I wasn't even promoted once)

I wonder if their pirate game they're supposed planning on making at some point will do the same thing with sex selection where choosing to be a female makes everyone switch organs without any of the respective switches in personality and everything else.  I mean, there were actually real female pirates in history, some of whom actually survived for a while.

Hard to say, in Broadsides I found it amusing that it was some basic alternate world, because they'd basically have had to write another game to show how a female is treated differently in old timey navys (or not be there at all as would be realistic) :P

Well it could easily have been done the same way every other fantasy game does it.

Except that Choice of Broadsides covered the story in a way true to the time period.

Okay, so, today this girl I know-Lauren, just took a sudden dis-interest in talking to me. Is she just on her period or something?

Unless you play a woman.  Also, what time period?  It doesn't even take place on earth.
