Plans for a Cocoa Tree
« on: April 18, 2010, 02:58:54 pm »

I'm planning on adding a plant labeled "Cocoa Tree" which, when the leaves are ground, makes powdered chocolate. It'll be based on the quarry bush, but with limited climates, limited to hot and warm tropical climates.
Anybody in favor?

Also note that its leaves can be cooked, its leaves can be milled into powdered chocolate and its leaves can be brewed into cocoa drink. Also its seeds can be cooked. You dwarves will like it for its "bracing effect".
If that's too much for you, I can remove whatever you do not like.

I've got the basis for it already, Deon, although I will use it if this fails.

Dogs don't get sick from contact.  Not sure about inhalation.  But you probably already knew that, so, whatevskies.

Though I must say I approve.  Especially if a custom reaction to make the powdered cocoa into the material chocolate is added.

That's something I want to see documented in detail. Don't forget mashmallow beds.

Why leaves? Leaves from the cacao plant aren't used to make chocolate, the fruit/seed pod is. Unless you just can't make a new item representing that.

Regarding dogs, they get sick because they can't process theobromine well (the same applies to cats, probably to a greater degree, even). Making it a contact/inhalation poison is a bit silly, but I don't think there's any "ingestion" type syndrome vector, so there's almost no point in modeling it. Besides, dogs don't get sick from the stuff as easily as you'd think. A dog would actually have to eat a lot of chocolate in order to get ill. I mean, yes, it does happen, but it's not so easy that a single chocolate bar would cause your dog to go into cardiac arrest or anything like that. Depends on a lot of factors, though. Another problem here is that trying to model every food that's poisonous for every animal using syndromes would be a total pain in the ass right now, because a lot of examples exist.

It depends on the size of the dog, which we do currently have the tags to accommodate.  Say, why hasn't anyone added more dog varieties...

Also, yes, theobromine is poisonous to cats, but cats apparently lack the sense to detect sweetness, so they don't "woof" it down like dogs.

Cats still like fatty things (like butter, or... pancakes, from what I've seen), so I wouldn't be surprised if they much on chocolate. For that matter, I've heard of cats liking much weirder things, like vegetables of whatever variety.

A greater variety of dogs doesn't seem necessary to me. In terms of things you can currently replicate in DF, they mostly just differ in size and color, and we've got that already.

Might as well just plant Hershey's Kisses as grind cocoa leaves.  The plant's cacao, not cocoa, and the powder is an extract of the beans (which are actually seeds from the tree's large fruits).  If you want something appropriate to Toady's pre-1400 rule, your dwarves can make a drink from the nibs themselves (that is, from the beans), which is very much the kind of chocolate the Maya made.

If you give them cocoa, the drink is called cocoa.  If you don't, the drink is called chocolate.  Chocolate bars, the only reason we call the drink hot chocolate, are relatively new.  So don't use an anachronism like "chocolate drink".

To be fair, dwarves could wind up using it for different things than the pre-Columbian Native Americans did, since they likely have access to different spices, sweeteners, dairy, and so forth.

Cacao is part of the latin name. I'm using the slang for it.
