Throw it - Toss it - Fling it - Let the Thrown Weapons Fly

My system of throwing weapons consists of a weapon that is nearly identical to the ammo giving the appearance of the items being thrown. currently I am testing to see if the throwing skill can be used for the firing of the weapons.

Current functioning weapons

It works, I used it even back then in 2D version modding. You may want to give it a bit different name for the "launcher" though to be able to identify it as a launcher and not to confuse with a single ammo.

Hmmmm, it could get confusing but the point of them having the same name is so it appears the same as the ammo, and is not a separate weapon. stockpiles and your dwarves will recognize them as different in fort mode, but I can see where it will be difficult for adventure mode.

I got the firing of the hammers to give throwing skill, and am going to continue with the rest of the set (Knives Javelins axes etc.)

The only hitch I'm seeing, and as far as I can see it's hardcoded, is that it's also training archery at the same time as hammer. But otherwise, it works just as expected

Archery is actually ok of you think about it, that skill is general ranged weapon usage. throwing a weapon fits the set just as well as pulling a trigger on a crossbow, or drawing back the string of a short bow, or blowing through a blow gun. its sort of an awkward catch all skill, sort of like fighter (which seems to also include ranged weapons)

That is a fair point, just seems spontaneously inconsistent in the double-skill gain in comparison to other weapons. But it does work, so I can't complain

Its so simple and brilliant! hmmm but it wouldn't explain why it does damage like the thrown weapon, maybe Held (weapon name)? I'm going to go with that for the time being. Thank you for reminding me that the "Launcher" for thrown weapons is actually the hand!

Why not use the striking skill for the non-ranged attack, in case the dwarf decides to punch someone with his hammer throwing gloves? :)

[Puny Axe] the weapon you hold onto for dear life.
[Throwing Axe] the stuff you give with tough love.

The thing is... is it going to be balanced so that its not overwhelming win vs normal ranged stuff and vs similar weapon type?

Arn't ranged weapons 2 handed anyways?  Maybe they can use a buckler at least, but not a shield?

I had this idea to copy the sword and dagger raws, so I could make a sword and have the ability to throw knives effectively. Nice Idea.
