So how deep are these maps?
« on: April 14, 2010, 03:57:12 pm »

All around the forums I've been reading about people playing on maps over a hundred z-levels deep. Now I've created a world with some default parameters and another with customized ones (not changed anything related to z-levels)... and on all my maps if I try to go down, I get stuck at around 40 z-levels deep.

So my question is: Are my maps really that deep, or is it just that I need to explore deeper before I can move my view deeper? As in, maybe I need to dig to level 30 to see deeper or something?

If my maps really are this deep, can anyone tell me which option in world gen changes this and how exactly?

Experiment... start off on a map and designate up/down stairs down as far as you can go and see what happens.  ;D

Some maps are 100+ Z levels deep!

Keep digging!  ;D

I recently had a cave-in at Z-level -150. So.

Make sure you're using the newest version. DF2010 goes down very deep. The previous version only went around 40 z-levels. Maybe less.

My first 2010 map I embarked into a cliffside. Had some 130-40 levels before I couldn't dig any farther.

is there a difference between dig-ability and viewing now?

i've so far not embarked anywhere that wouldnt let me _view_ like 130 z lvls underground. I didnt try _digging_ to them, though.

You should be able to move the view to the bottommost layer of the map, my guess is you just happened to gen a rather shallow world, try creating a few more.

Just try it! Its not like you die IRL if Urist McMiner falls into magma.

For useability reasons, I prefer the shallower map.
My very first fortress, though, had many many many levels. Try embarking on a site that is a high elevation and see if that makes a difference. Or just check and see and then try in a different part of the map. It could be that the magma sea is at a set elevation, and we play everything in between the surface and whatever elevation that is.

One map I had about 280 z-levels from the highest spot to the very bottom. So they're very very big.

Around 200 on average.

Sort of a jump from 15, isn't it.

Would dropping living things down a 200 z chute be any more fun then a 10 z chute?

It is much more entertaining. If only because you watch for about a minute and then you see the floor coated in (more) blood.
