Dealing with megabeasts.
« on: April 12, 2010, 09:30:40 pm »

So... remember the awesome fortress with the whales?

Well, a megabeast made of lapis lazuli just showed up. I have no defenses set up, and a scarce military, but that's not the biggest problem.

It's basically a bronze colossus-- unkillable.

So, what do I do? Abandon fort?

Yes. Clearly a bug that ought to be fixed in the future, but exploit it in the meantime.

God no!

let it in and figure out how to export combat logs.

no, really though, can you seal yourself in and then build a trap chamber of some sort for it?

How would that work?

Magma's my best guess.  You could encase it in a never-to-be-opened drowning chamber and see what happens.

Bonus points if you leave a deeply guarded lever and pull it in adventure mode...

Either collapse something on it as shown above, OR, dig a big hole, get rid of the ramps, unblockade your fort (assuming you somehow magically blockaded it to begin with) and drop it in the big hole.  Fill with water/magma/goblin elf blood and then seal with lovely floor tiles.

I have a similar problem, however in my case it is a giant fine-pewter quadruped deep underground. I doubt I'll be able to kill it if it's anything like a bronze colossus (I'll have to test this in the arena). Unfortunately, although I have blocked off all access to the underground, I also have a large swarm of crundles/troglodytes waiting for me when I come to remove the barrier. I have cage traps set up, but this is going to make dealing with the megabeast somewhat harder.

My current plan is to let the crundles and troglodytes out into the cage traps, with my military on standby in case any more come, then quickly rewall the tunnel and build a side passage with a pressure plate triggered cave-in trap to contain the megabeast. I'll then sort out getting a crundle-farm set up.

EDIT: Just had an epic idea:

If a megabeast produces webs, I can make silk from them right? If so, it's time to employ some weavers and get a silk-farm set up.

EDIT:

Designs for the megabeast tarp!

# is a wall, | is a support, ^ is a pressure plate linked to the supports.

Also, another one has arrived in the same cave. This time it is a flying worm made of ash.

Can you not capture these things in cage traps? Excuse my silly question.

As far as I know, you can.

... I wonder how much you can sell it for. It is one-of-a-kind, afterall.

So there's that, as well. It looks like the only chronic problems that water can't cure are nausea and cave spider bites.
Which, coincidentally enough, can be cured by magma.

I somehow doubt you can catch them in traps. They certainly have the building-destroyer tag from megabeasts, so they will probably also have trapavoid. I'll test it when I come to clear out the crundle/troglodyte infestation anyway.

Trolls are buildingdestroyers and I've managed to capture one in a cage before. It didn't escape either, was very calm in storage with the goblins and elk birds.

That was no megabeast, of course.
