So uh much-belated PTW, and also update, and also
Annie either you don't know fairies at all, or you know just the right question to ask in order to emphasize their zaniness.
AKA diplomacy, because they obviously love being weird a f.

Edit:  Fairies are the manic pixie dream girl, except not nice.
Speaking of fairies in general, but Tom's depiction is pretty great.

Edit2: Oh and I know Ayilvu has looked pretty mature and such recently, but as a reminder, http://www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=326
Like especially 2 pages later, just saying

Anyone else been finding the comic pretty underwhelming for the last few weeks? Might just be me.

It was wrapping up the end of a chapter, new chapter just started, so naturally not a whole lot of action was happening.

But it's supposed to have been wrapping up this whole plot-critical arc, and Annie exposed as not-particularly-nice, and all that, but... I'm not even sure why the arc is plot-critical any more, and the last couple of weeks has felt like someone explaining why what Annie did was wrong... slowly and in the tones of a five year old.

I'unno, I haven't enjoyed it.

I think this chapter is going to start exploring the broader ramifications of what they did.

I don't. I don't think that Annie did anything THAT wrong actually. I think the fairies are just social (human social at least) retards with a blue and orange morality. It's reasonable for Annie to put people in danger with her schemes if they consent to it. Did she trick anyone into this? I'm pretty sure not. They knew what they were getting into and although yeah, they probably felt pressured by friendship to do it but that's what friendship is and it can't be blamed on Annie.

The worst thing she did was pressuring the fairy by offering a name to it in a way that might be inappropriate. But honestly even then that's totally just applying different standards of morality selectively to make her look bad. If she can accept and find meaning in the name gained in this fashion then it still has meaning even if it's meaningless to the giver, heck, giving someone something that you don't find value in but they do is just... It's just a really good exchange. And although the fairy said "She wasn't supposed to have yet" what's even the standard for that? Clearly from the fairy standard it still counts, and from the human standard this seems fair enough (unless there's further repercussions that we're not aware of yet.)

Fairies don't seem to have any appreciation for relationships in the way humans do in the long term. Maybe them changing into humans is slowly changing that (and that's why she had this reaction? She can actually conceive of future events causing her to loose Ayilu. Possibly.) but basically right now red doesn't actually have any appreciation for anyone but herself and views Ayilu as her property, which she got scared of loosing and is now retreating from what she perceives as the cause of that fear because she sees no value in anyone or anything else. And is being an asshole about it because she's actually an asshole. I can understand Annie being unable to appropriately respond to these accusations seeing as she thought that she might be friends with a being that's actually incapable of being friends with her so being told all this is pretty highly emotional, but yeah. Annie did nothing wrong.

I mostly agree with all of that.

It's also really weird.  The zany fairy is suddenly going super serious and delivering this long, protracted "You're a horrible person" diatribe, and there are so many holes in it.  It seems out of left field, and even (though this may be premature) like a cheap writing trick.

Hopefully it does come down to Red being an asshole.  I mean, she is.  Even if she has a point, which I barely see, Annie's put up with her crap for all this time.  This is a pretty lousy way to repay that.

People in the comments (I hate how he just deletes them all) were torn between "Where is this coming from" and "No it makes sense, she doesn't know about the psychopomps and Annie's sacrifice!"
But then Red mentioned the psychopomps, as if to quell that theory.  It's so weird.  I hope there's a good explanation coming.

I think this could serve as a good way of illustrating that as human as they can seem sometimes fairies are in fact not humans and are actually bizarre alien creatures. This is probably an important lesson for Annie, as the forest medium, to learn, and in fact actually applies to many of the forest creatures that seem to be humanlike at times (including her boss.)

At least, I hope that's the lesson that is eventually learned here.

To be honest this whole episode has given me a lot more sympathy for the court and the way they handle the forest.

I don't think Red is actually saying Annie is a horrible person.  Just that Annie has the wrong priorities in mind and she just ain't cool with it.

Its not actually that the fairies have different zany moralities in this particular case.  Humans can actually see it the same way as Red did in this situation.

We also need to keep in mind that we're dealing with a bunch of teenagers here. Expecting them to act 100% logically and reasonably is a bit much.

Don't worry, give them a few years and then suddenly they'll be completely adult for some reasons and have a girlfriend that looks eerily like their school crush.

Theory that i don't expect to be true but for which i will lol uncontrollably if it is:
Coyote is slowly smuggling himself into the court. One piece at a time.

Yeah, I'm kinda surprised they're actually taking them back to the court.

Honest question, did anything actually happen with Coyote's tooth he gave to Annie?  Or is that Chekhov's Gun still loaded?

Also, for today's panel, I like that the comments are 25% people smugly saying they understand without explaining, 50% people making wildly different guesses, and 25% people making "DOT DOT DOT" jokes or commenting on the gifts, IE last page.

(I really hate how the comments are cleared every update.  His choice I suppose, but I'm always going to post here or maybe on the slow subreddit.  Particularly with the huge "approval" delay, so most of the comments are iterations of the same thing rather than being interactive.  And yet there's still an accidental triple-post in this update)

It cut Shadow from the ground, which was kind of a big deal. Also cut through Robot's spine iirc.
