Kat explained that -- the ship steward-bots are dumb terminals with no programming of their own, they're just extensions of the ship.

I agree with the second part of this.  They accepted her as a provisional candidate for "angel" after seeing her work on the arm, but I suspect they still want to actually see her do something worthy of their inflated view of their original creator Diego (interestingly, they also now call her "creator Kat"), especially since as Kat herself just said, it's just an experiment that doesn't actually do anything.  I don't actually think they actually want to be human themselves, though being made more like their progenitors (exceptionally complex as they were) might be part of their vision.  It's more a religion thing for the Seraph-models.

Well, considering that the reader population started liking her a lot more, Tom's probably pretty happy with that panel's result.

That aside, I do think that Jack knowing the circle spelly thing himself would be pretty awesome. Though I suppose that the two could just be sharing knowledge.
