What is so wrong about POORING MAGMA on it and OMG UR AN ELF? It actually makes people feel apart of the community if you use common phrases like, "I found a carnival full of clowns down there" or "MAGMAAA" and generic Dwarfy-stuff like that. It really isn't much of an issue, so what's the problem? =(

Because it contributes nothing? If you were trying to have a conversation with someone and there was a guy standing next to you constantly spouting nonsense and terrible 'jokes', you'd have an issue with him too.

Yes, that thread was absolutely free of jokes and nonsense. If I were to pick one thread that was silliness-free that would be the one.

I reckon you're probably thinking of /d/. Tentacles don't tend to show up on /h/.

Funny story about /d/, I'd heard so much of it that by the time I finally checked it out, I was disappointed.

By the time I was 13 I had already been desensitized to /d/. People forget what's posted there is actually appreciated by someone with the corresponding fetish, so it's not too extraordinary.

I don't really like in-jokes, especially forced ones. They don't really serve other purpose than make those "in the know" feel superior and the others feel alienated. I find little enjoyment from laughing at something when someone else is going "Huuuh?" right next to me.  I guess there might be some feeling of achievement to be had from finding out the jokes, but still they are only funny the first time you hear them (often not even then) and annoying at all other times.

Also, I wonder how many people know the word 'meme' only to mean viral internet idiocy instead of 'cultural replicator' and how Richard Dawkins feels about that.

I actually stopped reading that thread because it became so overcome with annoying spam. I only read Toady's messages in it through his profile. It's rather sad that thread is the only image most people have of the community.

I actually stopped reading that thread because it became so overcome with annoying spam. I only read Toady's messages in it through his profile. It's rather sad that thread is the only image most people have of the community.

I never seen this view of bay forums before(mostly due to I never thought of checking out the general discussion of dwarf fortress) this place thread seems so dramatic over a discussion on archiving fan made reasoning to things that happen in dwarf fortress.

I stick to the lower parts, everyone there has mostly stopped playing DF (Except the new release) and the memes aren't as bad.

The upper forums are much too repetitive. I only come up for FotF and the occasional superawesome things like QuantamSawdust and Retro.
