What armor should I give each military dwarf?

@Footjob, you can microwave most grains I've tried pretty easily through the microwave, even if they aren't packaged for it.

Animals that caravans use to carry goods will have to be killed.

What armor should I give each military dwarf?

Whatever you can afford, the more the better. Armor section on the wiki http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Armor is hard to read, but it melts down to this:

blue stuff > steel > iron, bronze > copper, silver > bone > leather > cloth > silk > nothing.

Everybody needs a shield.

Armor can be layered, like having breastplate, 3 mail shirts and 5 cloaks on the same dwarf.

This means, for a "munchkin" outfit you'd need about 10 pieces of metal, and 20 of leather plus plant fiber socks.

A diplomat left unhappy because he was unable to meet with your expedition leader/mayor/other important noble.  When a liaison or diplomat shows up and wants to talk to one of your dwarves, he'll follow that dwarf around until the meeting is concluded, or the dwarf he's trying to meet with dies, or goes insane, or gets replaces, or goes into a strange mood, or possibly just after a few years go by, although if there's a timeout it's a long one.  Most likely this means that the dwarf in question (your expedition leader/mayor/other important noble) was too busy to get around to the meeting.  To avoid this, you should disable all labors on the dwarf in question when a meeting needs to take place, so the meeting will actually happen in time.

Note that the only real negative effect is the lack of a trade agreement.

i have a breeding farm, cows, horses, mountain goats, raccoons, dogs, bears, and wolves, all trapped behind a series of pet impassable doors, pulled the lever to open cages, and they proceed to cluster by the doors until eventually someone opens it and they all rush through( usually when stupidly i let a dwarf go get the empty cages.

how do i make it so they are content with chilling in their rooms?

Build many ropes or chains and attach each animal to one.  Other than by chaining or caging them, there's nothing you can to do stop them from at least trying to path to a meeting zone.  As you've discovered, pet-impassible doors aren't much of a solution by themselves.

i thought if i forbid them they would just roam around their rooms, i have LOTS of each animal and want them to keep reproducing i don't have the supplies to make hundreds of chains or ropes

Pet-impassible doors stop animals from traveling through them, but they don't stop animals from trying to travel through them.  So, as you've discovered, the animals will just pile up on one side of the door constantly trying to get through.  If you want them to just chill out in their rooms, you need to make the path completely impassible to both animals and dwarves.  Lock the door completely, or link it to a lever so you can manually open and close the door remotely.

You need to make the door completely forbidden, not just pet-impassible.  Once you do that the animals will just hang out where they are and not do much of anything.
