Thanks for the answers guys, so the stairs thing, what about like downwards and upwards stairs? If I buidl downwards and then another downwards it won't work right?
Correct, you need to match down-stairs above with up-stairs below.

Or you could just build up-down stairs everywhere.  It's much easier, but also dangerous, since if someone dodges a goblin or something at the top of an up-down stair they'll fall all the way to the very bottom.

Thanks again :) I have dwarf therapist, it doesn't load, does it matter that i'm using a texture pack?
I solved it eventually by selecting anyone may trade, it was pointless anyway all they had was junk :/
Well, that's what elves are like.  Wood, berries, cloth, awful booze, expensive and useless Gnomeblight, sometimes weird animals, and mounds of useless trinkets.  Don't knock it, what are you mostly selling to people?

I use Elves to convert my excess crafts into expensive Gnomeblight.  If I suddenly find myself a bit short on trading, just roll up a few barrels of Gnomeblight to settle the difference.  And no kobold's going to steal a stupid Gnomeblight barrel.

I can't see your computer from here.  Maybe it's blocked by a boulder or tree or something though.  Follow the green path up until it turns red and see what's in the way.  You can smooth boulders to get them out of the way, (D)esignate, (S)mooth.  You need a dwarf with the Engraving labor to do it.

Though for what it's worth, caravan wagons currently don't work and therefore the Depot will be "accessible" if there's any land-based path from the map edge to the depot whatsoever.

the conditions were bad enough to turn a dwarf who didn't care about anything mad, that's pretty hardcore.

Ahem. I know this isn't a bug report topic whatsoever, but I need a speedy little reply. Is being completely unable to place a Trade Depot a known bug for .18? Its seriously getting in the way of my community fort.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Still having this problem. Using Ironhand's graphics, .494 for dwarf fortress .18, so its not a graphics issue.

First fort...

I went through the first spring with no traders showing up, no alerts to tell me they couldn't make it. And now that it's a little into summer, my first wave of 8 immigrants has shown up.

My impression from reading is that there's a caravan each season, and always before migrants arrive. Is this wrong?

Re:Depot: I placed mine in .18 with Phoebus pack with no problems. Mind you, it has yet to be used.

The Dwarf caravan shows up at the end of Autumn, usually starting in the first year.  Elves arrive at the end of Spring, and humans at the end of Summer, but those two don't show up until the second year at the soonest.  Not seeing any caravans till the end of the first year is normal.  You do usually get two immigrant waves in the first year before any caravans show up, this seems to be hard-coded into the current version.

Weird bug, but... rivers now don't seem to be an obstacle. My dwarves walk over them like jesus! Caravans too. They use the river as a direct access highway to my fort!
