If there's magma safe items sitting at the bottom of a magma channel and obsidian cast the entire channel, what happens to the items?

I believe they are destroyed.
When dwarves are encased in ice, it is possible to retrieve some of their belongings by digging out the square, or melting it. I don't know if it's the same with obsidian, though.

They're encased in obsidian, and can be mined out again.
Lost an artifact into the magma moat once, and had to cast obsidian over and around to extract it.

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

How do I get a wild animal from the cage to the butcher shop?

You have to tame it or kill it first, and most wild animals cannot be tamed without a Dungeon Master.
I suggest a few weapon traps in a hallway leading between the cage and your fortress.

I never realized caging an animal for a while would tame it. That's the first time I ever slaughtered a tame fox.

What? Caging an animal doesn't tame it, you need an animal trainer/dungeon master for that.
Are you sure the fox didn't come from a merchant? Those are pre-tamed.

How can I build a second storey on an above-ground building?

All you have to do is give your dwarves access to that z level to build.
Build "up" stairs (b - C - u). Then on the z level above those stairs, build down or "up/down" stairs. (b - C - d or x).
I'll let someone else explain ramps.

Build some up stairsnext to the wall, than down stairs on the level you wish to build. Make sure you do corners first, though.
Use up/down stairs instaid of down stairs for milti-levels.

Darn, ninja'd.

Ah! But I forgot the corner-advice. Though maybe that one's best-learned through experience?

Can an animal trainer train an animal inside a cage? because I never bought the animals. Did those elves bring animals? I don't recall. There's also a couple deer, a rat, a cougar, and a buzzard, all tamed.

This is very strange, as most of those creatures are exotic, and cannot be tamed without a dungeon master, who does not appear in current versions.
