My dwarves are wearing worn-out clothing.  How do I get them to upgrade to the many masterfully-made clothes in the stockpile?

I've been playing version 40d for ages, but have been hesitant to switch to 2010 due to reports of world-shattering bugs of terror.  The changes made to 3 sound wonderfully exciting.  Have things stabilized much since its inception? Would you recommend a switch to the latest version?

(if this has already been asked to death and back I apologize, I made a cursory look about the forum for a similar question but didn't see anything recent.  Feel free to heckle, browbeat and otherwise flame me if I've already committed an error of extreme noobishness)  ::)

What do you mean by 2 and 3? 40d and 31.xx? If so, the majority of the bugs have been ironed out.

I did, just noticed how strangely I put it and changed it... sort of.  Looks like I saved the changes about the time you posted your reply.

Thank you!  I'll give it a try  :D

Caravan Guards killed a buzzard, and my dwarves hauled it off to their refuse pile. My butcher however, refuses to have anything to do with it.

This is not the first time that I've found butchers to be finnicky about what corpses they consider "butcherable" (another instance was with a nightwing, which I killed with my military, and likewise with a set of three raccoons). I was eventually able to convince the butcher to tend to the raccoons, but the buzzard and nightwing remain soon-to-be-rotting.

How do I crack my whip down on that lazy S.O.U.?

edit: corpse is not forbidden.

What's the largest weapon size a dwarf can use? I've got a great axe and a maul and several people with no melee weapon are not going for them. A bunch of wooden weapons from an invasion too, but I don't blame them for not going for them.  :P

Full list of weapons, organized by dwarf-usability (two-handed weapons prevent equipping of shields):

Can be wielded by dwarves one handed
Whips
Battle Axes
War Hammers
Short Swords
Spears
Maces
Crossbows
Picks
Bows
Blowguns
Large daggers
Scourges
Flails
Morningstars
Scimitars
Training swords/spears/axes

Can be wielded by most dwarves one-handed*
Long swords

Can be wielded by some dwarves two-handed*
Pikes
Halberds
Two-handed swords
Mauls
Great axes

*Due to deviation from average size, there are dwarves capable of wielding weapons too large to be dwarf-wieldable (two-handed minimum size 62500; compare to average dwarf's size of 60000). These dwarves aren't very common. There are also dwarves too small to wield a long sword in one hand (one-handed minimum size 57500).

Hmm, I'll prolly wanna trade the maul and great axe off again if only to keep a shield then. Thanks.

You could put them in weapon traps.

That is an excellent idea and it will be implemented immediately.  :D

What difference is there between iron and steel anvils, besides steel anvils being more expensive to buy?

Can I use a retracting bridge to drop enemies standing on it to their doom or are bridges deactivated when there are units on it? If this is impossible, how else can I drop enemies down a pit?

None whatsoever, other than more value.

Drop away.

I read there was a weight limit and something about mounted units. What about megabeasts?

Megabeasts, FBs, Clowns and possibly some other creatures can't be flung or atomsmashed by bridges. The wiki should tell more specifically.

Urist Imiknorris: Thanks.
