Why wont my dwarves spar? I have them in a barracks that is set to train, and the squad is set to the active/training alert, but all they're doing is the individual combat drill. Is it a bug or am I being stupid?

As of 31.08 they can only do individual practice.
They will train with inactive status too. Free the barracks to get them to stop training.

Does anyone have luck finding tin in the depths? Or is it a bug in the ore specs, no alluvial layers in any world.
http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Alluvial_layer

I'll just mod the tin ore to be in other layers.

The only ore of tin is cassiterite. Shows up pretty frequently in my world.

Has anyone had any luck with plaster and bonesetting? I can't get my dwarves to use or even store my own gypsum plaster. There's a note on the bug entry for it that one guy found that he could use purchased plaster but not his own, I haven't traded for any yet though. Someone else said it was something to do with the fact that it's classed as a stone?

I'm trying to connect a windmill to a screw pump with no luck

help?

I'm not sure if I'm reading this right, but I think you have your windmill right next to your screw pump on the same z-level, which I don't think will work. You need your windmill one z level above your screw pump (or you could have your windmill on the same z-level, but you need to connect a gear assembly underneath, and a gear assembly next to the screw pump and reroute power around that way).

Can a dwarf power more than a single pump in a stack by himself?

Dwarves love waterfalls. Do dwarves like lavafalls? How far away would I need to put a small magma river to void setting things on fire?

Well, I know that dwarves like walking through the mist from waterfalls. I'm not so sure they'd like walking through the "mist" from magmafalls.

Military dwarves are returned to civilian status whenever they go into an inactive alert. When that happens, if they have no civilian skills, they will get the unhappy thought. Have them all make a few cheap weapons or armor to give them a nice moodable skill, and the problem will go away.

It seems that you can build a farm on non-irrigated land, as long as at least some of the farm is irrigated. Is this deliberate?

If you do that, the farm will not work.

Hey, I solved the Fey/insane problem (Actually problems, shortly after one dwarf went insane (who later died in his room) another dwarf crafted a gem artifact)

But, some of my woodcutter(s?) got ambushed by some goblins, and it seems all my dwarves are going outside and getting themselves killed. Is there a way to get them to come back inside, and stay?

You'll have to use burrows if you want to restrict their movement to inside the fortress.
