You know, I don't recall any of this when Drake was in charge. *Looks self-important*

More than half of the fortress has died now, all from thirst.  Even Drake, the mayor, has died during these troubled times. There... There are only eight of us adults left. I have taken charge as leader, but there is little I can do. Nobody wants to work and pull us out of this. All the brewers have gone mad, and the rest of us don't know how to make alcohol. A crazed child had taken the only dwarf with any cooking skills, a Carpenter, murdered him, and flayed his skin to make a hat. Bodies are finally being taken out, but I fear it is too late.

We will die here.

Sounds like real tough times.  Sorry I've been so quiet this last week, college is distracting.

Alright, it's now the 8th day into lordnincompoop's turn, and the date on today's update is the second month of spring, so I'm guessing that finding time to play is in as much trouble as the fort itself?  ;)

Flayed his skin to make a hat...  Very neat, sounds like you managed to get a rare fell mood.  Good show!

There's a few things we can do at this point, of course, and the first choice is mostly lordnin's - are you very close to having enough time to finish this year, like one or two days more at most?  If so, you are welcome to finish your turn, and if not, we need to pass play to the next player.  mathlc, hope you're reading this soon!

If lordnin is not finishing up very soon, we as a group have a few choices.  Last time we took lordnin's unfinished 206 save for the next player, as it was left off in the middle of autumn.  We can either revert back to the save before lordnin's second turn began, since this turn wasn't finished either (and it sounds like the game might be on the edge of being lost as well), or we can ask him to upload his new save and the next player, mathlc, can continue on the brink of extinction - it would be like playing out a shortened year 7, as there's 10 months left to go.

Or, does the fort die here?  It sounds very, very close from the sound of the updates.  We have several players lined up for next turns, for all that we've had trouble getting a turn finished for almost two months now (lordnin, we kept your first 7/12th finished turn, but that's not quite a finished turn either ;P).

I'd most like to hear preferances from current and pending players, as we are the ones who will be keeping the game alive past this point, or not.  What is our will?

Updated turn list:

lordnincompoop - Year 207 -current-

mathlc - Year 208 -pending-
Grimlocke - Year 209 -pending-
Burnt Pies - Year 210 -pending-
Jordrake - Year 211 -pending-

Hey guys, sorry I haven't been participating. I'm currently stuck in Texas, in the middle of nowhere, with satellite internet.

Imp is still in charge I hope. Well, he still looks active. Anyways, Imp, send me a message when you get time and explain to me what's going on. I don't have time to read everything at the moment.

I hope the fort is still doing well, it seems that it's still going, from recent posts.

Ok, lord, however there's still a couple other voices to speak, cause I've not heard their choices, and you've gone past your turn's time ;p.  So, technically we can revert to the previous save without breaking any of the founding rules, because of the time limit - if we want to.

If 'we' as a group want it over, it's done, of course.

What does Grimlocke want?  Jordrake?  mathlc?  Burnt Pies?  For that matter, what's Kamudo, our holy founder want? (Your mail will come soon, great one  :P)

The turns of this thread have been skipped and skipped recently, except for lordnin's playing.  But those on the waiting list have not skipped out - do 'we' want the game to go on?

I'd quite like to carry on, it looks like this is a good fortress.

Apart from the death, destruction and mouldy corpses.

We've run out of drink completely, and all water has dried up. We need barrels to make it, but the woodworker's doing a shoddy job, and that's if he manages to do anything in between his fits of grief. seven more died, and our good dungeon master has perished too.

I no longer blame them. It is too much. perhaps I shall sleep-

Ah. Migrants. Wide-eyed, they approach the fort unaware of what will lie ahead. New blood perhaps there is some hope left after all. Sleep I shall, but perhaps later.

Alright, we've heard a few votes to keep the game going now, which is great.

Lordnincompoop, I am certain you'd like to continue and finish your turn, and normally I'd strongly support this.  And I'm really sorry I'm not supporting it now, so I'm explaining why.

Your last turn (Thank goodness you played it!  We'd had a few turns not taken before you did, and you made great improvements as well as giving us good updates) started on 5-9 and took until 5-28 to get the save posted for the next player, and that save didn't quite finish the year at that point either.  That is a full 3 weeks, and much, much longer than our rules permit, even with an extension.

I am really, really sorry to call time on you now, but from your update today and your update yesterday, sounds like you managed to play through just 7 game days in the last real life day and it's still middle of spring in your year.  It's already day 10 of your 7 day turn, and you're not almost done by a long shot.  Please forgive me, but I'm making the call to pass this turn to the next player.

You are totally welcome to ask for another turn at any point, even right away, and you'll get the next slot, but please do aim to finish your year in a week.

I'm also scared for how you've played the fort this time.  Your update didn't make it clear, but -how- did this tantrum start?  we had 68 dwarves when this save in the middle of fall started, more than 600 brewable plants and just over 250 ready-to-drink milks and brews.  There's one unhappy dwarf (scarily he's a champion, maybe he snapped and it spun from there?) and 5 fine dwarves, but the rest of the adults are content to ecstatic.

In five months, on a waterless map (since we've not found the underground river yet) we went from that much of a cushion to having nothing to drink and all dying from thirst, without any explaination in the update?  I'm scared you're 'letting' the fort die, by not permitting any of the dwarves to brew drinks.  I fully accept losing the fort through play (I almost lost it during my turn even, from military/ambush troubles I mishandled and a tantrum spiral I barely managed to end around the end of my turn) but I'm scared you're causing it to die now, on purpose.  Hope that's not the case, we do have players that want to keep it going.  Let it die a natural death, if and when it dies?  Not murder by player, if that's what's been happening this turn?

So, I'm calling time, and passing the last save on to the next player.

mathlc, thanks for your patience, your turn begins!  I'm sending you a personal mail as well, to help catch your eye.  You've got one week (plus a day or two if you are nearly done) to enjoy the end of 206 (since our save stops there) and all of 207.  Keep us posted, we love updates!

Here's the save, and have fun! http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=2421

This have stabilised around the fort. We are now 26, and have around 100 units of drink. Enough to last a while. I will not feel safe until I have built up a drinks stockpile larger than that, but as the carpenters and brewers chug away I can focus on other matters. We are beginning the mining on the workshop complexes, with the warehouses to come later. The mayor had died earlier and with me at the helm, thing are going to be much easier.

Spoiler: Planned Workshops (click to show/hide)

And hey, let me at least upload this one.  :-\

EDIT: And look, the reason it all started was the casualties of a certain few dwarves during a seemingly "puny" siege. That caused a bunch of unhappiness, which I ignored. I didn't bother to check much on status either, as I though that the drinks supplies would last. People started dying of thirst and being killed by tantrumming champions, so I started to brew some alcohol. But all the carpenters were tantrumming and eventually went insane, so I had to get some peasants to do it, at which point all the brewers died off. It doesn't help that no would heal either, since we have no water.

And anyway, I though you wanted in-character stuff.

Hey there, lordnin.  I really hate to be the bad guy, and I really hate to disappoint anyone, but I think no matter what I do in this case, I'm going to upset someone.

Here's a review of Kamudo's rules, copied from our OP.

The Rules:
No Mods.
No Helper Devices.
No other bad/exploitable devices.
Games will Run from Spring 1 to Spring 1. So as soon as you get a message saying Spring has arrived. Save it and give the file to the next player.
Your turn can take up to a week, if you don't finish in that time, the next person plays from the previous save.
It's advised to make periodic updates about your fort in a 'leaders journal' fashion. An End of the Year Report, describing the important events of the year is required.

There was a player before you, directly before your first turn in fact, Grimsledge Bloodbeard, who started his year and didn't finish.  Per the rules, despite his updates, we reverted to the last save and passed the turn to you.

I unilaterally made an exception for you, and took your mostly finished year, even though it took three weeks to get it, and since it wasn't finished by the rules I should have reverted.  3 weeks is a really long time for the next player to wait, no idea if it contributed to the loss of the next few players after your turn.  Sometimes people just get tired of waiting.

My reasons for taking your save then were:  You were almost done.  You seemed to have made some really strong improvements to the fort, from what I could tell from the updates.

I feel less eager to make a second exception, and I'm sorry I didn't make that very clear from the beginning of your turn.  And when I look to the rules, to the words of, as I call him, 'the holy Kamudo', the rules say revert back if the time's to long, and/or if the turn's not done.  And this time I'd like to follow them.  I don't want to waste your time or anyone else's, I want to run the game as was given to me to do.  So my answer is follow the rules of this game, revert the save this time.

As to in character, and why didn't I ask - Of course I want in character stuff, and I don't fault that.  I did find this turn's a little hard to follow, we went from work being done, migrants coming, and elven ice cream (everyone say eww or you're a traitor  :) ) to no work getting done, no drink, all sorts of corpses, a tantrum happening, no explaination what changed.  To accusations of necrophilia, referances that half the fortress is dead, only 8 adults left, 'the rest of us don't know how to make alcohol'... scary, and scared that your playstyle became 'the fort dies now'.  That seemed to be what you were saying, in your in character updates.

As leader of this Succession fort, I'm backing up everything Imp says.

Even though I haven't been around, reading back through the posts, it looks like you're intentionally not caring, or something.

And, you've taken far longer than the required time, as already stated. So, sorry Lordnincompoop, but we're reverting, and passing the torch onto the next player. As they have been waiting patiently, I think they should finally get a turn.

As to the 1 week turn, as long as you're being productive, it will be extented, no problem, but in the case of Lordnin, I must say, I don't feel it's been productive.

The holy Kamudo has spoken. >__>

Mathlc, enjoy your turn. :3
