In my current fort, a Tower-cap mini-forge worth 58880 urists.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

My first two artifacts were crappy crafts, then legendary furniture for the dorfs to drool over with the mini-forge squeezed in between them. Also, a nickel spear by a possessed weaponsmith. Could it get more sucky?

The nickel spear could go into a weapon trap? (Do weapon traps add to room value?)

The most useless artifact at Gearholes that's still valuable is definitely Beakfrills the Uncertain Turmoil, which is a native gold crown worth 112,800.  It's made from bloodstone, tube agate, and (duh) native gold.

The most impractical artifact at Gearholes that's worth a lot is a golden axe.  A giant one, at that.  Worth 109,200 and made from gold bars and turtle shell, Visewards the Metal of Blankets is only useful for bragging that Gearholes has a golden axe.  Sega would be proud, I'm sure.

Wouldn't pretty much anything made of adamantium completely beast anything made out of any other material, unless you were going the glitchy Planespacked route?

Sure, but I'm not sure anyone would let their moody dwarf use such a precious metal.

Update:  Just made a turtle shell earring worth 142800.  It contains native aluminium and star ruby though.

Yeah, that's what I did. I also had a Rhesus Macaque spiked ball in a weapon trap to spruce up my dining hall.

Mine are an aluminum earring (possessed mood) at 129600 and a brown zircon amulet at 106800 from a jeweler type mood which I thought would make something useful but every time I reloaded, it kept making an amulet.

Most of the artifacts in my fort have been of the useful variety, namely furniture

I have an adamantine flask worth about 1.5 million dwarfbucks.

Absolutely and utterly useless.

You could set it up in your kings/queens royal suites. Not sure if that will add to value or not though.

I bet it could hold liquids pretty well though. It could hold magma!

That would be cool, only problem though, you can't order your dwarves to fill it up with someting specific

I'm not sure if corrosive liquids are in for the next release, but if there are any, adamantine would probably be the ultimate for something that is extremely corrosive.

The king already has a native adamantine throne, table, statue, and coffin.

Yay for fey moods and having a large percentage of my fort as being miners.   :D

Pratically all of the artifacts of my fortress "Tombsgrips" are expensive useless items. It's kinda sad, really.
First, there's "Wildblunted the Executioner of Gravel", a cat leather bag worth 31200 units:

(Dwarven beak dog is a type of creature I created some time ago, very useful little buggers :P)

"Idolgallows", a pig iron shoe worth 117600 units:

And finally, "The Brutal Band", a zinc idol worth 64800 units:
