Hey guys, can you guys check to see if this is real? If so...this is not going to be good for US-Ecuador relations.  :(

Um, bump? Anybody knows how can I verify this newspaper article? I know you guys disproved that article on nuclear fusion, so I'm sure you know how to solve this.

Can't disprove it, but a cursory search seems to show N. Korean news agency as the only original source carrying this news. Which is extremly fishy, to say the least.

Ecuador's president, Rafael Correa, is something of a leftist, but not to the extremes that Chavez is. He's more of a neutral third-party in the whole US/anti-US global paradigm.

Given that I can't find any trace of this through official channels or mainstream news sources, I'm going to have to call bullshit.

EDIT: And for the record, Kim Il Sung was Kim Jong Il's dad. He's also been dead 16 years. Kinda unusual to get posthumous citizenship conferred.

I dont think it's that unusual. I kind of recall it being done to famous historical figures posthumously. I doubt this is the case, though.

BTW: What's with the obsession with North Korea?

Did you know that in theory Kim Il Sung is still the head of state in North Korea?

For those that didn't..

Fun facts with Bay12! Things you do not want to know, but get shoved down your throat anyways!

Not exactly. Kim-il-Sung is Eternal President, but that was in the preamble of the constitution, and thus not really legally binding. Also, North Korea adopted a new constitution that had no mention of the Eternal President, if I remember correctly.

The head of state in North Korea is Kim Yong-Il, or somebody like that. The (figurehead) President of North Korea.

A few days ago this news network said North Korea discovered nuclear fusion, and that it was a power source. For those of you who have any concept of fusion, that should really send a message about the site.

Chavez is pretty unlikely to give the North Korea heads of state any reward, either.

North Korea officially refers to Kim Il-sung as the "Great Leader" (Suryong  in Korean 수령) and he is designated in the constitution as the country's "Eternal President". His birthday is a public holiday in North Korea.

Quote from: Wikipedia
The line "eternal President of the Republic" only appears in the preface, not in the functional text of the constitution and it is not associated with any government office with particular responsibilities, powers, privileges, etc. Furthermore, the only person to have ever been referred to this way was dead at the time, so this reference does not constitute an actual office.

There is currently no president of the DPRK as the office was abolished in the 1998 constitution and its powers divided between three offices: the head of government, the Premier (currently Kim Yong-il); the President of the Supreme People's Assembly (currently Kim Yong-nam); and the head of the military, the Chairman of the National Defense Commission, who is Constitutionally the Supreme Leader of the country (currently Kim Jong-il).

I am however wrong in saying the new constitution removed all mention of the Eternal President. They instead removed all mention of communism (according to North Korean propagandists, communism cannot be achieved with the existence of imperialist powers (like the United States) but socialism is doable). You can read it here.

The theory that Communism can only succeed if everybody does it at the same time goes back to Trotsky, so it makes sense that they would say that.
