My X-Com operatives in Los Angeles managed to retrieve all signs of the alien attack. They were carefully transported back to the X-Com base via un-marked tractor trailers.

This resulted in riots. Many people turned to looting and vandalism when the only evidence of an alien invasion and their human opponents was the destruction left behind, the people felt their government was covering up the truth.

The damage to the city was thankfully not as bad as the people's reaction. approximately 500 dead including casualties from the ground mission. The large ufo had destroyed a few office buildings before landing and dropping off it's attack force. It immediately left earth's atmosphere. It seemed to have no plan to return to retrieve it's soldiers. The death toll would have been much higher if the aliens had attacked while the office buildings were full of employees.

Many people fled the city to escape the madness of neighbors and rioters. Unfortunately the psychiatrist we had decided to employ was missing. He and his family were unaccounted for and my operatives were searching the city for him. Rumors spread of a cruise liner boarding any who were fleeing. It set out of port once the looting and rioting spread to the docks. I have dispatched some operatives with the assistance of the coast guard to find the cruise liner.

When the Skyranger returned, I met the ground team in person. Some faces were excited at a mission well executed. It is true that we suffered minimal casualties compared to the force we were up against and had managed to protect the populous from certain doom. Other faces were filled with concern and suspicion for Tamunshin who along with Archangel were the last to leave the ship. Tamunshin was a wreck, She had a nervous break down on the way back to base and Archangel had been trying to comfort her.

I walked up to her and Archangel. They both stood tall and saluted, Tamunshin's cheeks stained with her tears. "At ease. Archangel, you and the others go get some rest. Tamunshin come with me." I directed. Archangel looked to me before nodding and leaving to return his equipment to Manny. Before leading Tamunshin away I looked her in the eyes. "What we face is a force no group of humans, before today, truly knew existed. They are an enemy unknown to us. It does not surprise me in the least that they have ways of attacking us that we don't fully understand. Do not despair Tamunshin, you will be integral to helping us understand what these... monsters, are capable of; and how to stop them."
She nodded softly and absorbed the information I had quickly layed on her. Before she could respond I turned and began to walk. "I have sent for the best experimental psychiatrist the world knows to come and help you and I to deal with this new threat. Each soldier I employ is a valuable asset to our cause, both as a combatant and as a figurehead. Understand that this attack on Los Angeles is not possible to cover up completely and word will spread. This secret struggle is about to become a full fledged war, and we need soldiers like you who stand against our invaders."
We arrived at her personal quarters and I opened the door for her. "These aliens have wounded you soldier, not physically but mentally. Take the time you need to recover, we're counting on you to help us understand our aggressors and I know you'll do us proud." I place my hand on her shoulder and smile reassuringly.
"But commander, what if... what if it happens again? I felt so powerless. I wanted to stop but my hands kept moving..." She started to shake her head as the pain came back to her.
"One step at a time Tamunshin, heal up. We've got work to do." I stepped out and closed the door for her, leaving her to her thoughts.

I asked Archangel and Cerapa to keep an eye on Tamunshin while she recovers.

I returned to my personal quarters, rubbing my head as I turned the corner to my door I noticed a short but attractive Latin-American woman, dressed in a professional suit-skirt, waiting outside my door.
"Uh hello miss..." I stammered, trying to recollect any memory of her.
"Aura Luna" She interjected, seeing my obvious confusion. She turned to me and smiled. "I'm the personal executive assistant you had recruited."
Of course! I had completely forgotten I had sent for that. The administrative duties of base commander were abundant and time consuming and I needed help taking care of the little things so I could focus on more sensitive work.
"If you have the time, I'd like to go over with you what you'd like me to work on." She stated.
"I think I have some time, come in and take a seat." I opened my door and held it open for her. I followed her in and pulled my desk chair out for her while I sat on my messy bed.
"Sorry about the mess, had an early morning." I tried to straighten the bed out a bit.
"It's OK. So I received you're message outlining the administrative duties you wanted me to preform..."
After several minutes, our meeting ended and she left to attend to her duties as well as get settled in her quarters.

She had left a small headset on my desk with a note. It read:
"I'm confident I'll be able to handle any task you set for me, you can reach me with this headset directly and vice-versus. I look forward to working together."
I smiled and put the headset on, it fit easily under my military cap. I checked my computer quickly and found that I had a meeting with the funding nations in an hour to discuss the recent attack on Los Angeles and the future of X-Com.

To Be Continued...

sorry there's no pictures this time around. I have been a little distracted lately so I didn't get as much done as I had hoped. I felt it appropriate to end the post on the turn of the month. Put a little suspense into the meeting with the council. I hope everyone is enjoying the side story with Tamunshin. I seriously hope muwahahaha doesn't mind that I made Tamunshin into a character that cries. It is not my intention to turn anyone's character into a squishy emotional movie character and it is my sincere hope that Tamunshin comes out of this a hardened alien killing machine. we'll have to wait and see.

edit - holy crap why did no one point out that i had repeated myself?

I don't mind, I'm glad that you're taking the time to build up characters like this whereas most LPers will just throw them away. Besides, Tamunshin FINALLY got a kill.

yeah about that, apparently Tamunshin has really bad firing accuracy so I'll try to get her some action next time she is in combat.

oh shit, guess Tamunshin has low psi strength
what is she gonna... crap
if only more traitors could be rooted out this way :P

Name: The Chosen
Preferred weapons: 2 Pistols, change to one laser pistol when available but keep the other 2 pistols against enemies weak to those type of weapons, Stun Rod, motion sensor (for the giggles), a med kit and 4 grenades that explode when something walks on them (forgot what they are called).
Story: Chosen by a secret society to join X-Com and gain alien tech. He was chosen because he was the best of the best. Try to get him some high stats, mostly in strength, accretion, bravery, and action points. He slowly will try to get more people to join his cause and steal tech from X-Com. He considers Alien Tech dirty and will only touch it to steal, never using it in battle.

I'm cool with the the stuff added with the mod, and I think a base in Canada, more specific Vancouver to honor the Olympics and because no one ever makes a base in Canada  ;)

EDIT: I would not want him to be one of the starting 8, but more of a another soldier that got in X-Com through unknown ways and will replace the first guy to die.

Just as I came back and was going to post a nice little bit of story on The Chosen, he dies so:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Name: Tiberius Seius Cato
If anyone is wondering it's a Roman name. I imagine the Cult of Sirius to all have some sort of Roman name.
Bio: Unknown, no information at the present time, but X-Com recruiters  was given a very large sum of money right before he joined. Seems to not like to socialize with the rest of the team, and just goes into the shooting range by himself. Doesn't like Tamunshin, because she (he?) killed a fellow worshiper of Sirius. Is known to sneak off during the night to a unknown location near the base.
Weapons: Anything alien, from mind probe to Baster Launchers. Also Psi once available.

Just made some changes to the Character I want to replace The Chosen, and took out the spoiler.

There was no rest in the hour prior to the meeting with the council. I had gathered my notes and was starting to read through them for one last time when someone started knocking at my door.
"Commander, could I get your help in the HWP department please? There's some crazy girl in a lab coat cutting apart my tank!" Mario yelled through the door.
"Give me a minute, I'll be right out." I replied, thankful that it wasn't a ufo detection to interrupt me this time.

I followed an angry Mario to the repair facilities that housed the HWP's when they were not in use. From outside I could hear the sounds of someone using a blow torch.
"You gotta stop her commander, There won't be a tank left soon, None of the repair techs are willing to get near her while she has that welding torch in her hands." Mario says in despair.
Just then the sound stops, a moment passes as I start to open the door, I'm greeted with the sight of a small woman in a white lab coat with long messy purple hair tied back into a pony tail. In her hand, held above her head, is a mallet which she quickly brings down against a chisel she had been holding against the turret of Mario's tank. A loud clang is followed by another as a chunk of the tank's armor falls loose onto the ground.
"What are you doing?!" I shout out to the small woman.
She turns her head, wearing purple lipstick to match her hair she stared at me through small, custom made welding goggles. "SCIENCE!" She replied as she lifted her goggles up off her eyes and jumped to the concrete floor where the piece of metal had landed. Scooping it up quickly she takes out a loupe and inspects her work.
"Stop what you're doing now, identify yourself and explain why you are damaging a very expensive piece of equipment." I said forcefully.
Without looking up She replied. "I'm head scientist Zilvara Dejewels and I'm recovering data on the alien weapons. And this, this is gold!" She holds up the chunk of metal she had cut off the tank.
"Well Zilvara, how about we let the hard working repair technicians put this machine back together so it'll be ready for it's next mission." I replied. "Meanwhile, why don't you show me what your talking about."
"Sure I can do that!" She replied both loudly and enthusiastically. She tosses the chunk of metal into a satchel she had nearby and slung it over her shoulder.

While we walked towards the base laboratory she tried to explain why she had been cutting up the HWP. "Mario's tank has been taking a lot of hits from the alien weapons but all we have been doing so far is patching it up and getting it ready for the next mission. I thought we should know what the effects of the alien weapons actually were and why they are so deadly." She pulls out a chunk of metal from her satchel and points to a burn mark on it. "see how the alien weapon causes a burn? How the metal seems to have melted in this spot? Well if you look at it under a microscope there's actually foreign metals imprinted into the armor. This one is palladium." She puts it back into her satchel and pulls out another one."This one has specs of nickle and the one you saw me take just a minute ago is imprinted with a spec of gold. What does it all mean commander?" She asked quizzically.
I stared at her blankly. "What does it mean? Your the scientist." I replied confusedly.
"I've found plutonium, thorium, carbon, mercury... Commander, I believe the alien weapons fire a mix of random periodic elements. I need more information though." She stated as she set each sample of the tank's armor on a table, 12 in total.
"Well... Let me know when you figure something out..." I left, confused. She was obviously very intelligent but also very eccentric. I checked my watch and cursed my idleness, the meeting was in 15 minutes. I nearly ran back to my quarters to gather my notes and head to the meeting room.

In the meeting room I met With the 16 representatives from the funding nations. I greeted each in turn and beckoned for everyone to take their seats. "First of all I thank you all for coming. Since my arrival one month ago we have detected 6 ufos and recovered 4 of them. If you look to your third page you'll see that we failed to recover 2 of the ufos because of limited air capability. We have Killed or captured a total of 26 aliens combatants. I feel this has been a good first month up until the Los Angeles fiasco."
"What exactly happened in that case commander Snow?" Asked the American representative.
"If you will turn your attention to page 16 of my report you'll see that a fully armed interceptor jet plane. These jets are the best of the best of human engineering. In this case the interceptor engaged the ufo, hit it with every bit of explosive power a human organization can muster short of a nuclear or hydrogen warhead. The ufo was damaged but we failed to deter it, it landed and released it's payload of soldiers, including two floating discs that we believe are their heavy weapons platforms." I stated, pausing for a moment. "We sent in a ground team to neutralize the threat while the ufo left earth's atmosphere. Our ground troops were successful and civilian casualties were relatively low."
"The streets of Los Angeles are in an uproar commander. Do you think that is a success on your part or the aliens?" The American representative grilled me.
"Our investigations show that the rioting is in response to the cover up system in place. My suggestion is to reveal the existence of X-Com but no specific information. Let the people now there are forces aligned against this threat. If we could employ a team of public relations specialists, we can minimize civilian casualties by educating them with evacuation and early spotting systems. X-Com ground troops could then be seen by the public as an effective response rather than a confusing conflict."
Quite discussion amongst the Council members started.
"X-Com is supposed to be a secret organization to combat a hidden enemy, now it's spreading into the streets?" Argued the American council member.
"Make no mistake council members. The aliens are stronger than us and they have made themselves known with this attack on Los Angeles. Unless this remains an isolated incident, this is the beginning of a world wide war. We need your continuing support if we have any hope of ending it." I argued back.
"Let us move on to your research exploits commander." Stated the Japanese representative. "I see here you have had great success in creating a new bench mark in field medical equipment."
"Yes, earlier this month we developed a multipurpose "med-kit" that incorporates a portable digital x-ray camera and a full set of sterilized surgical tools. The med-kit's tools are reusable without the risk of cross-contamination and includes a set of commonly used drugs. Lastly the med-kit is rugedized so that it and it's contents can survive sever drops and movements. It can even be safely thrown towards a group of soldiers who are in need of it." I continued to explain the uses of the med-kits and our success in distributing them to the open market for extra funds.
"Very good. We smile upon the advancement of useful technologies and these sound like they will be of great use if the conflict with the aliens should escalate. I see here though that you have also developed... "laser" weapons? Please explain." Asked the South African council member.
"Yes we have a working laser pistol prototype with additional copies in production as we speak. The technology is looking to be very promising. The technology requires no reloading in short term skirmishes, the power source is adequate to power it for eight hours of constant firing. The projectiles are streams of super focused light particles that can easily melt through an inch of solid steel. In relation to conventional weapons, laser weapons are incredibly efficient and power, requiring no kinetic or chemical force so there is no recoil to disrupt precision firing." I continued to explain the cost effectiveness of laser weapons and that our scientists are showing great potential with larger, stronger versions of the laser pistol.
"Earlier this month you came to us in need of emergency funds. you held an auction of alien artifacts to us. We have decided as a group to instead offer a bounty on such items. Simply contact us with the intended items for sale and we'll purchase them and divide them amongst ourselves." Explained the representative from the United Kingdom.
"That sounds very agreeable. Now about this month's funding. Would you please submit your report of promised contribution?" I asked confidently, feeling that the council was overall satisfied with my efforts. I received the paper and it was almost unanimously positive, only Brazil had not agreed to increase their contribution.

"Thank you for joining me council members. This meeting is adjourned. I hope to see each of you again next month with more good news." I smiled and stood up. The meeting had gone much better than I thought. It seemed that each council member was united with me against the threat against our world. There was no backstabbing politics to worry about, no bickering. Just serious discussion and support.

I returned to my personal quarters and checked my e-mail. Aura Luna had sent me a notification that the latest group of med-kits had been sold and the funds added to our account. I brought up the organization's account and was pleased to see that it was well above the 7 figure mark again.

It had been a very long day and I looked forward to my head meeting my pillow for the night. I readied myself for bed and was asleep before I could collect my thoughts.

TO BE CONTINUED!
------------------

holy wall of text batman!

I know that it was mostly a recap but most of it still needed to be done, it would be weird if country representatives showed up and said "You earned x points points, you receive y extra dollars per month"
and did anyone else notice that France of all places is giving us the most funding? more than both the USA and Japan? whats up with that?

"Computer, open my personal log." Zilvara commanded to thin air, her PDA springs to life with a soft blue glow.

"Today's work went well but I don't understand these people here. A simple data recovery job and they get in a uproar. They called in the base commander to inquire about such a simple task. Well lets see today's catch. A nice set for the collection. Nice to see samples of clear elements in these metal sections. I will have to add these findings to my papers on the alien weapons. I wonder how many elements the aliens use in their weapons?"

"Computer, note that we will need to probably take a chunk of the heavy weapons platform's armor for weapons tests next time to see if we can replicate this damage ourselves. I wonder if that one gentleman would be willing to park his tank in front of a recovered alien firearm so that we can get deflection or effective range statistics..." Zilvara strokes her chin for a moment and hums to herself quizzically. "Mmm probably not. Oh well a loss for science. Now lets see... oh yes."

"This last month's laser tests were good. Such pretty colors we were able to pull off as we narrowed down the frequency  range of the beam. We will have to work on power scaling and consumption rates as we go."

"Next item - Bodies: Why can't these soldiers shoot cleaner? We have plenty of bodies but they're a mess! Where are the clean hits that professionals are supposed to be making? They need more training. In addition to that maybe we can tune up the targeting capabilities of their scopes so even a monkey could shoot straight."

Zilvara sighs out loud. "Computer please add to my notes that we need more researchers to process all this data we're getting."

"I wonder if we can get one of those floating platforms the ground team ran into late last month. Would be fun to play with. Maybe I can get the commander to let me make a scooter out of one. Maybe that HWP operator would like to play with a floating scooter too?" Zilvara giggles. "Maybe that would calm him down."

"Oh speaking of that, note to computer, if we can develop this technology make a smaller unit for that one soldier who lost his legs, maybe he would like to be able to zip around that way. Remember to put a speed limiter on it in-case though." Zilvara giggles at the thought.

"Computer, note for future reference. I will need to speak to the psychiatrist who will be arriving soon and that solider involved in the unfortunate shooting of a fellow soldier. If there is a possibility of a new weapon, I want to get the data on it soon or we will be in trouble also need to make a shielding for this base as we don't want them to be able to find out how it works and if we can weaponize it. Aliens with such spys could be harmful to us and our effort to combat their kind."

"I will have to inform the commander of such possibilities. I will need to clear this log up later for her viewing. Computer end log for now and encrypt with the triple redundant factors as always."

Zilvara gets up from her computer desk and looks around her office. She heads over to a workbench and picks up some vials filled with odd colored liquids. She turns to the console. "Computer, lets continue with today's experiment. Let's see... One part of mixture A combined with two and a half parts neodymium... Hmm that's odd..."

A small explosion rocks the complex and an acidic smell spreads from Zilvara's persona lab. Zilvara steps out of her room and sighs, brushing soot off her smoking lab coat. She heads back to her personal quarters, her hair standing on end behind her. Those who pass by the labs for a few hours later notice it's bold odor.

Very odd that France is so generous. It does mean that our next base should probably be Europe. We don't want to risk losing all the funding we're getting from there!
