Am I getting smarter... (Family Guy)
« on: February 22, 2010, 02:42:53 am »

...or is Family Guy getting stupider? I'm not sure of the exact moment, but Family Guy went downhill at some point. Or it was never uphill to begin with.

I think it got bad around the time it started using non sequiturs as its main source of jokes.

Thats rather harsh Markond and cynical.

Family guy is very conistitant, in my opinion. Its earlier season are deem as better because what it was doing was new. Its been a bit, and a long term audience know what Family Guy does, and it never really deviates from it.

I also dont consider it bad really, I dont think a large portion of the audience is laughing out loud at Family, or the two shows. It is humorous, and enjoyable, that really enough to be watched.

I've stopped watching it as much as I once did, as I've grown overly tired of its tropes.

American Dad and The Cleveland Show, I also find tiring due to inescapability of the similar writing style. Though I find myself giggling at American Dad every 10 episodes.

What I dislike, though is that Simpson has started to adopt Family Guys tropes to some degree.

Thankfully though, Archer has been a salvation of animation delight for myself.

This.  I used to watch Family Guy all the time, and it's entirely based on "Hey, remember this" and recurring joke reaction-laughs.

Yeah, I noticed that to.  One of the things I used to like about the Simpsons was the unpredictability of it, in spite of the events being linked in a reasonable and believable manner.  Now it's just plain unpredictable.  The zany plots don't have the same cleverness to them that they used to.

Also, they started using 3DCGI in the show.  In my experience, when a largely 2D animated show starts dabbling in that mid-series, they're already going downhill and are looking for a new gimmick to help revitalize it (which doesn't work).  This seems to be especially true when the CGI isn't all that good, relative to the quality of the 2D animation (which also seems to be the case with the Simpsons these days).

Alternately: The Brick Testament. It's a really fun look at what the bible would look like if interpreted literally. With Legos.

The sad thing is that Family Guy wasn't always jawdroppingly horrible, it used to be just mediocre.  I remember when Brian was going to be neutered, Lois' dad said "This is all like a Greek Tragedy.  You'll be playing the part of Sans Testicles"

I lol'd at that, and I'm not afraid to say I lol'd at it because they were being clever and funny.  At some point Seth McFarlane realized he didn't actually have to try (Probably when American Dad was a huge success, despite being the same show with more political jokes) that the show went from subpar to a menace to society.

Welcome to like five years ago. It was funny in the first season and maybe more after that but it's been bad for forever.

I've never been a consistent watcher of Family Guy. I catch it on occasion, and to me it has always been a pretty hit and miss show. There are some episodes that are funny, while others are so exasperatingly stupid that I don't bother watching them.

It has funny moments but awful quarters of an hour.

I dont know where this decline is really. Family Guy seems really stable in its writing, it just tired.

I did just watched the robostan episode, and I liked it. I thought that was pretty good, despite its tired plot of fran and stan needing to find themselves a couple again.

This reminds me of the time when I stopped watching family guy because it was repetitive and boring.

It should have stayed canceled.

It's like the plot starts off in the back seat if it even gets to come along at all. Mostly it's just lolrandum jokes followed by squeezing the plot back in as it they forgot it and had to fit it in somehow.

And the Chicken fights? Every time one happens, I lose track of the real plot and usually don't bother catching up.

Family guy is hilarious.

Your all like "Yah sure I laughed at it and had a grand old time, but the show is really stupid and the jokes dont go along with the plot so I dont like it."

Seriously you people need to get off your high horses.
