a 3 tile wide entrance into a cliff is usually my front gate

or if i decide to dig straight down i make a wall and a hole big enoguh to let wagons in.

I set up an armor stand right near the only entrance and my sparring dwarves are the first to know if the enemy is trying to sneak in.

Before I knew how to play DF I make a terrible mistake with my fortifications: I didn't put them on a different level or dig a moat in front of them, so enemies could walk up to them and shoot through them into my firing position.

I "solved" the problem by putting statues in front of the fortifications.  Statues block movement but either don't or only partially block crossbow bolts, so when enemies came calling it must've looked to them like the statues were shooting at them.

That was my first fortress.  Good memories.  :D

My silliest defense?

I prefer the silly execution chamber more than the silly defense. So, I have a crapload of cage traps in my entrance. Gobbos that get caught go into either a) my 1-tile animal breeding pit, or b) by Ultimate Whippit. (It uses a wooden whip, and so gobbos take ages to die)

If you build a gator moat, make it in a floodroom. when enemies come, dump them in the room with a bridge, then flood the room.  then open other floodgates that let in gators and possibly carp.  can you catch carp in a cage trap....hmmmmm

I don't have carp, I only have an underground river, so I have cave 'gators.  I suppose it wouldn't be too hard to just build a "lid" to put over my pit, like another drawbridge, just at waterlevel.  But it's not a floodroom, it's just a resevoir filled with 'gators.

Personally, I like [DF] because after climbing the damned learning cliff, I'm too elitist to consider not liking it.

A long, two space wide hallway, with a retractable draw bridge over the top, and a bridge at either end that seals it off. Pull a level, and any and all goblins are shredded as large quantities of BEARS fall from above. I'm trying to get enough bears for this, but they don't seem to like cage traps....
Drop bears! Epic!

I may have to make one of those but getting a wooden whip might be troublesome unless I start murdering Elves. Hmmmmmmmmmm.

I bursted out laughing so hard at this that my dog woke up, came in the room, and looked at me like I'm an idiot.

Then proceeded to brag about how he has 27 kills on his kill list and is super-doggenly tough.

Do elves even have whips? I never recall seeing a elf lasher, nor woorden lashes, even though I kill almost every elf caravan.

Meeting area in front of the entrance.  While my masons, metalworkers and carpenters run off in terror when the goblins show up, my marksdwarves, war dogs and giant desert scorpions that happen to be hanging out there make short work of them.

I was thinking lava+water on a retractable bridge on top of a tower over the top of the fortress entrance. Use a dwarven computer to sync the bridge to the obsidian forming and have a repeatable cave-in system...

WHY DID YOU HAVE ME KICK THEM WTF I DID NOT WANT TO BE SHOT AT.
I dunno, you guys have survived Thomas the tank engine, golems, zombies, nuclear explosions, laser whales, and being on the same team as ragnarock.  I don't think something as tame as a world ending rain of lava will even slow you guys down.

An absurdly wide, completely unprotected hallway. Okay, it has a catapult, but that's it for protection.

It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

Well, magma rhino fall, basically  there was this long corridor, i waited till enemy army was nearly at the end, then hit the magma pump, this very slowly filled the corridor from my fort end, as orcs retreated suddenly dozens of war rhinos would fall out of the roof behind them, blocking any hope of escape.

Was originally meant to be elephants, but apparently rhinos are stupider and run into cage traps way more often.

Second only to a repeating spike maze made with traffic orders....... alas they seem to ignore them when scared.... and you occasionally un-forbid all the items on it by accident, or forget to turn it off after. Messy, very messy, so many unintended victims....

Also almost to effective, routinely kills off the leaders almost immediately and sends there minions running to the hills, fully unspiked....

Using a catapult for protection is probably as effective as using an o-ring for a condom.

@random51:...Shit. I got to tell my girlfrien-Waaaaait.

Well, I currently haven't had anybody attack me, and I'll probably replace it with a bastilla once I get a legendary siege operator. My military can handle anything short of a siege anyway.
