I dig a hole in the ground and put a bridge on it.

Water/magma is optional. Makes a good suicide pit for the melancholy dwarves.

Maybe I should try making it deeper...like, 10 z-levels, maybe. And stick spikes at the bottom. Just in case any goblin falls down there.
