I was bored one day at school so I looked up minecraft on wikipedia. It mentioned Dwarf Fortress, and the rest is history.

I was once reading about the difficulty of EVE online, which was a game I played for a while, and some article mentioned somewhere that DF was even harder than EVE in terms of interface. CHALLENGE ACCEPTED, I thought.
I downloaded it and have been playing ever since.

I first learned of Dwarf Fortress by watching Jefmajor play adventures on youtube.
I then began watching Plumphelmet play followed by Revocane. They have the best stories of DF from what I can find on youtube.

Years ago, I watched someones lets play (I think it was DJrodw or something) of Terraria. I looked around his channel and found some DF videos. I looked at them, and I didint even consider it a game. I downloaded it, and baisicaly just dove in. At the time, i was aperently too much of an idiot, or too arrogant, too look for the wiki. I kinda just jumped off the deep end, and played it here and there, but, being the gifted child I am, I picked up the baisic concepts of the game, but never really got into it.  After a few months (mabye even a year), I was looking around Desura, and found Dwarf Fortress.  I thought to myself, "wow, i recognize that, its about time i got into it again". I got it off Desura, just to organise things, however the Desura version was royaly buggered. It crashed 2/3 times, so i just re-downloaded it again, and played more often. I learned how to play after a few weeks, and thats when i really got into it. That would be why im here, in my basement, alone, on a Saturday......

Umm, I think it was a mix between seeing boatmurdured on lparchive.com and I kept seeing links to the article on TvTropes. This was around the time I was getting really into games like nethack and ADOM. I only recently started getting really into the game, after trying it a few times overe the last year or so. I kept abandoning my forts because I was struggling to figure everything out and there were aquifers everywhere. I've finally started a fort recently where I'm going to take it all the way to "the end"

Looking forward to that.

Found a link on tvtropes and read boatmurdered. I could never get into fortress mode, but I liked adventure mode. I installed a graphics pack and the rest is history.

I can't even remember... It's like trying to remember your first breath. Dorf Fort has been a part of my life for too long for me to be able to pick out the moment I found it.

Googling random stuff, which included "boat", found boatmurdered.

A PC Gamer article listing about 250 free games. I liked dwarves and fortresses, so I checked it out. I said "This is gay" and quit, then read Boatmurdered and had to learn.

I've played both games since alpha/beta. Sometimes taking breaks, but been following them constantly. I have to say, the learning curve cliff for eve is just as steep as DF's. Wealth of information in both. Graphics make eve easier, but hell to that. But with eve, you can take a hike up the cliff till you get tired, rest a while, and then keep going, taking years to get to the top. With DF, if you stop to take a break, you'll have fucking zombie goblins beating down your door and ripping off legs and tearing tendons and magma flooding and demons.

TV Tropes.

At first, I noticed the name of the game popping up in the examples sections of various trope pages. Then I checked out the game page itself, which led me to Boatmurdered and the Failcannon Saga. There were other stories too, like Bronzemurder, but these played the key role. After Failcannon, I thought "This game is probably awesome, but there's no way I'll ever figure out how to play it". I was halfway through Hellcannon when I finally mustered up enough courage to try. I followed the wiki to the word. I remember the amazement at how I could make the dwarves do something. And so, step by step, industry by industry, with the game in one window and wiki in another, I learned how to play.
