@Tiruin: I'm unsure how qualified I am to give advice, since I suck at taking pictures of myself, but maybe just try sitting in front of the camera for a bit, and practice different facial expressions until you start to understand what expressions complement your skull structure. (Of course, judging yourself can be really tough, so perhaps get input from other people?)

I think it's because his eyes are pretty darkly coloured and the lighting makes it impossible to tell the iris apart from the pupil.

Yeah, it turns out I took 85 pictures of myself with a small orange to get the five I posted (not that all the rest were bad, but I did various poses, angles, and lighting and picked a couple that were different from each other to post). Also, my camera has a tiny mirror on it, so that helps.
