Package stuff in a rar file in your downloads folder labeled "v1.2Patch" or "StarSoldiers_Beta".  Hidden in plain sight, right alongside all the other game demos and updates you've got locked away in there.  And it's a heck of a lot safer than trying to hide something in the recycle bin (I once got the chance to root around on an abandoned laptop.  Whatever idiot owned it last had all sorts of things packed away in there, and it wasn't trash).

Indeed, I think about security a wee bit too much.  This is why my password is remarkably long and complicated, which makes booting up a pain in the arse every time.

Not that I've got anything to hide, of course.  No no, nothing at all.

Better yet, go to a game you already own and hide stuff in one of the image files in it, sprites or pictures of gameplay or whatnot. Nobody's going to look into your games and search hundreds of files to find the one that's too large.
Or you can host files online, if you don't have too many and it's not something you have to install or whatnot, just images or videos.

First off, if it's a rar file, change the extension as well. And a downloads folder is something people will actually look in; try putting it in some random system folder instead. Nobody's ever going to find "C:\Windows\twain_32\aaftwain.mip", and if they do, they probably won't question it.

That's the trick I learned when I was about 14, anyway.

That works if you don't live with someone who is quite knowledgeable about the workings of a computer and who has manually combated many system infections which, of course, place odd file names in various system folders.

Said person is also quite uninformed when it comes to gaming, and I've got dozens of other game-related rar files sitting in the downloads folder.

I think it would still be preferable to hide it in an image in an existing game; that way you get an extra layer of protection.
Or even hide it in an image and then compress it into a rar... then change the file extension and compress that into a rar and change the extension to a .dll or something so it not running/being quite large won't be suspicious.

Of course, you need to find a balance between making your porn or whatnot secure and making it so convoluted to find that it's not worth the effort to get it when you need it.

Furtively I break the RSA
And then proceed to masturbate
To my decrypted Pentagon documents
That I stole from the government. Urbate.

I just keep everything in various folders on my desktop and have a password lock upon opening the laptop up. This "save it as an image file as a rar within a game" crap is so convoluted.

It's for people who have parents that demand admin accounts or such.

Why do people download porn?
God damn, just look, use, and delete all evidence.

Hey, not back in the days of single-user computers that the entire household uses!

There's a good point here, and that is: If you want to hide something from someone, you really have to consider who you're hiding it from.

Maybe it's not available for immediate use - for example, a computer with dial-up would not be able to look at porn quickly, it would be more convenient to download it. Or maybe the user enjoys super-high-quality porn and projects it on a giant IMAX screen. Or maybe the user has a strict organization system so he can quickly find the specific type of large-breasted midget porn that he wants at that moment, and view any part without having to wait for the whole thing to load. Or maybe the porn is a large file for some other reason, like a full good-quality movie or a simulation. Or maybe the porn is only available through torrents and can't be seen online. Etc.

If you want to hide images, you can make a rar of them and use (command prompt) DOS to fuse them with a harmless .jpeg, .gif, .png or other image format. A file will be created, when its extension is that of a image file, it'll show up as an image, when its rar, it'll open the rar file you fused it with. Only problem is that you end up with a unusualy large image, so an observant person might notice it.

I used this to hide my camwhoredom before I was of age  :D

Anyway, a really simple way to hide a file is putting everything you want to hide in a folder, find some random program's main folder, and stick it inside of any of its sub-folders. Game folders work great because they usualy have alot of sub-folders. Then carefuly track down your browser's history and delete any suspicious entries you made that day, and restart the PC. It'll take a specialist to find out, and you don't have to risk using shady scripts.

Also, specialy HD intensive games usualy have folders full of compressed files. Making a rar and renaming it so it becomes nearly identical to those files and storing it among them is a great way too, as long as you can tell it apart from the others.

Another good tip is to aways just recent documents on windows after you have accessed those files an delete any entries that could lead someone to them.
Anyway, best tip is to never download any pr0n, thats just asking for spyware to infect your PC. If you just want to hide a file though, any of these methods work nicely. None of this is illegal either, unless you're using it to hide illegal material of course :P

Which gives me another good idea. Some game related files can be rather large. Would it not be possible to fuse them together with a .rar to create a file for which it is rather hard to see if it's unusually large (If that screws a game over, use a game you're not going to play for a long time anyway). Don't do it to the .exe of course, people might check if the size is right. Use some file they're not likely to check in the first place. Bonus points if that file's size changes trough modding or is playing, so they can't check the size with on-line references.

I think its possible but you'd risk corrupting your game, depending on how it makes use of that file. Just make sure the game can access the file to its full extent while running and that the constant size changing doesn't corrupt either file. I wouldn't bother with differences in file size as long its not a HUGE difference, and as long as that file remains deeply hidden among the other game files. Of course, storing huge video files in your DF folder will make it rather obvious when people notice your DF folder just got 1GB bigger overnight.

You can also make a private account on some file hosting (4shared is a good example) and just store everything there. Just make sure to prevent the browser from saving your account info and deleting part of the history after.
