Sorry to interrupt the impending flamewar about the earlier flamewar, but v4.9 is out now, with apparent fixes to most of the major causes of the NPR events breaking into your time steps.  It'll still happen because of the way the AI works, but there were some loops like NPR races trying to raise shields in a nebula that are supposed to be fixed.

Actually from some inside info 4.91 is going to be released in about a day and will fix most bugs like error 5.
Its save compatible to v4.9 so its fine...  else it would be called v5...

Ok, right off the bat i am having trouble.

When i press "New", instead of bringing me to that larger screen with more options in just shows me the same small screen but the game name is reset and where "New" was there is now "Save"

when I set the numbers back to normal and hit save, i get an error

Error 3265 was generated by DAO.Fields

I don't know if this matters but i have Firefox and when i downloaded this it had the aurora and a flash download, i didn't download the flashplayer thing.

Finally finished that fight I was in with the crummy quality image.  I defeated them all...sorta.

The battle went sour almost the moment they got into energy weapon range.  They were using mesons, making my fancy armor and shields useless.  My main laser corvettes went down, and I ordered everybody to GTFO back to home system.  But the enemy ships were gaining.

Thats when I had a thought.  "I wonder if I can manually target my PD missiles..."  So I switched to my missile PD system and set the targets and pressed open fire.  Sure enough, salvo after salvo of tiny size 1 missiles were being fired, 20 per salvo.  They were designed to hit stuff twice as fast as the pursuers and had a 80% hit rate.  Sure they only hit for 1 each, but 80% of 20 1 damage missiles is 16.  More than the individual 800 ton ships could take.  Pecking down the pursuer numbers 1 or 2 at a time.

But eventually they caught up to the next croup of fleeing ships, My Aegis class escort destroyers, almost 100% Point defense. And I had a similar thought. "If PD missiles are that effective against them, I wonder how good CIWS and PD lasers are."  And sure enough, next 5 seconds. the two Quad PD turrets and the 3 CIWS started tearing those little gunboats new ones.  Doing as much damage as the front lines ships' 'slow but pack a wallop' main plasma carronades

So in the end I have 1 Escort destroyer, my EWACS and my empty offensive missile corvettes victoriously fleeing the system.  The entire enemy force (excluding a mysterious large EM contact that made no attempt to move toward me during the whole fight) either destroyed or with no engines.  I'll come back once I make repairs, reload and replace some of the front lines Corvettes and destroyers that didn't make it and clean up the mess.

Lesson: If you aren't getting missiles shot at you you can use your point defense weapons offensively just like your other weapons.  They don't do much damage individually, but a lot of them can add up fast.

@Micro If you used that "Download Aurora" link that shows up in the forum's advertisement pane that's absolutely ancient.  The new versions are elseware.  Gimme a sec and I'll find and link it.

And yes, thats the version I got first too.

In these threads' OPs  Donno Steve's policy on direct links.
4.75 (Has most of the game definitely need all this) http://aurora.pentarch.org/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=1830
4.9 (Came out yesterday-ish just unzip into yout main folder) http://aurora.pentarch.org/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=2026
4.91 (Bugfix for 4.9. Came out today) http://aurora.pentarch.org/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=2040

IMPORTANT: This game does mess with some system dlls.  I havent had any trouble but there's a good chance that you will already have some of the dlls.  And windows will come up asking if you want to keep your current files instead of using the old ones the game is trying to use.  The game will still work fine with the ones you already have. The wording is confusing.  Say yes to them one at a time.  Do not say no, or god forbid no to all!

Well, the link you gave me for 4.9 is on the forums, cant you just link the download site directly?

Also i don't think the wording is confusing at all, i read it and it was obvious. I think people are just too used to pressing No all the time  :P

Seems more respectable to link to the forums then to just link to the download, at least in this case since Steve puts all his releases out in the forums.
There is no dedicated single page to get all the downloads anyways...

In version 4.75 (the one I'm playing now) There is a shitload of 94 errors when I click on the economics button. Is that fixed in later versions?

I only want one download and i don't want to fill out another forum registration with my email and everything again.

It only comes in three downloads and the downloads are hosted directly on the forum; the forum doesn't link to a download page. It's relatively painless to register, and your email won't be used for anything; if you're still really worried about your email use an alternative one.

Do you have a comma as a decimal separator and not a period? That is supposed to cause a lot of errors.

Basically download em all...
1) Do 4.75 setup,
2) after, unzip the zippy looking stuff that came with the 4.75 download and move them to the Aurora folder....
3) then unzip 4.9 and cut+paste that over to the Aurora folder
4) unzip 4.91 patch and cut+paste that over to the Aurora folder

At least thats what I did...

EDIT:
Fun Fact... or v4.91 bug?:  Armor on fighter engines entirely cancels the fighter designation...  took me awhile to figure that out....

Armor doesn't cancel it completely.  I haven't quite figured it out completely, my guess is that, a fighter can only have a certain weight in armor and weapons.  I have created a heavy fighter once with 3 thick armor when I was messing around with really high tech.  But yea, usually you can't put more than 1 level of armor on.  Same with weapons, usually you can't put more than 1 on, but if it's light enough sometimes you can have 2.

Are you sure you're under 500 tons with the fighter?
