Is there anywhere else that has a tutorial on Aurora? Because the one on the website is mainly talking about how he made the things work.

EDIT: Most of the tutorial seems to be him talking about what the tabs are, and not how to do things which is what I need. I want to play this game but I have no idea how to get started.

there are time-organized tutorial from game creation to ship design on the wiki

http://aurorawiki.pentarch.org/index.php?title=Aurora_Tutorial

that's the first page, on the bottom there is the link to the main index and to the second page; the tutorials are organized that way until they're not and become a bit messy, but it should cover all the basic in a conveniently ordered wall of text.

Heh. Had some hostile ships chase one of my scouts into a black hole system. I guess their tactics...

 8)

sucked.
I feel like punching you in the face for that. :P

spoilers transformed earth in a glass parking lot. silly me, I though 200 meson cannons on various turrets would be useful for the single ship that attacked.

turns out that at the 16000 tracking speed turrets have there is only a 3% chance of hitting their salvo. and even then, only about one shot in fourth actually stopped a missile.

 :o
Holy cow, those must have been fast missiles!

If its the spoilers, then yes, they were very fast. The kind of missiles the spoilers use also explains why not every shot that hit got a kill.

Then my work here is done.  :P

Incidentally, that is why 4xSpeed4xSize is a good idea for your AMFC.

IIRC the tutorial doesn't actually cover missile combat, so you'll need to ask here/muddle through it yourself.

And my current game hates me. It took twelve years to recruit a Missile/Kinetics research lead, with a measly 10% bonus and 15 lab limit, and ten days after he arrives he develops a health condition. Aurora is trollin' hard today. OTOH, I've got an EW specialist with 50% bonus and 45 lab limit, so I figure I can just go with a light frigate design and churn them out by the dozen.

Easily. In fact, if you want to you could have giant planetary hangars that launch system patrol craft, which in turn carry fighters which launch automated drones that in turn fire their own missiles.

On the other hand, it's all done with the same mechanics; if you put a 200 ton weapon on a fighter, it gets 200 tons larger. And a 1050 ton hangar deck can only hold 1000 tons of fighters; there's no combat potential magically gained by having fighters instead of mounting the weapons yourself, and is only worthwhile if you have a plan/use for those fighters.

Edit: Elaborating a bit, the simple version is you can give any ship hangar capacity, and then put anything else inside. If you wanted to you could build a 100,000 ton ship with an 80,000 ton ship inside it, but there's not much point to doing so. Fighters on the other hand can be useful, since you can have small fast ships based out of a larger, slow ship and attacking at range while the expensive mothership remains safe.

On the other hand, ships inside of hangars do not advance their maintainance clock so you can build giant planetry hangars to park your high maintainance ships in to keep them in good condition.

Did you remember to copy the contents of the zip contained in the original download over to the directory you installed Aurora in then copy contents of the latest patch? Another possible source of problems if you are running vista or win 7, is if you installed Aurora into a directory within program files, as windows doesn't like users copying stuff into there themselves.

Ya I had to create a different folder entirely just to place Aurora in, but it fixed the problem, and I am now genning my first universe

EDIT: How do you distribute Research Points if you didn't automatically do it at the start ?

You cheat. It just keeps a counter of when you've cheated as much as you allowed yourself :P

In other words, go into space master mode, then (re)open the economy window and "instant research this tech".

You also have a certain amount of build points for instantly creating ships (Fast OB Creation, Shift + F9).

The same goes for giving yourself ships; the "Create OOB" option gives you a point value based on your starting civ, and allows you to spawn ships which you have designed, deducting from the total. Once you pass zero, you're into "official" cheating territory.

Thanks, that is much better. I shall now go about this monumental task. But now I have to ask....is it worth it? What is the combat like?

Wait.

Why have I played for many months, had bast interstellar empires, subjugated races of xenobiological matter beneath my iron heel, and yet I never knew about this?

...All those years spent waiting to build my large ships to start exploring... No wonder why my last game progressed so quickly. I tried small, fast ships and within the first few years I had already launched small bare-bones exploration vehicles and has a half-dozen particle-beam ships, as well as one 13k ton ship-killer followed by 3 6k-ton anti-missile & PD ships.

Damn my idiotic use of massive 20-60k ton ships my first dozen games. :P

Dang. I did not know that either.

That does it. Now I must design and build the Matryoshka-class line of ships. Just because.

Hm, so I killed the precurser ships in one system, and now there are 2 thermal contacts from populations (Strength 10 and 5). I dropped some ground units, but nothing happens.
Now i also put a Xeno team there, wonder if that is what i should do?
