Universe sandbox is a good one. I think it costs about $20, but it's definitely worth it. Has some systems preloaded, and lets you set up your own with planets, asteroids, multiple stars, and such. edit: link edit 2: It appears that it's also on steam.

Also, with the twin planets example, in real life, they'd probably be tidally locked to each other, as Pluto and Charon are (the closest real example to a double planet).

Edit:

And here's how I plan on keeping invaders from getting through my jump points. Two at each gate should be enough.

What happens when they jump in out of range, or just fly out of it? That's the main reason I don't use jump point defense bases, though weapons and sensors are destabilized engines aren't. My preferred jump point defense is meson FACs or fighters.

Though a point blank shot from those plasma guns would hurt like crazy.

Bremen, anything outside of the top-tier jump engines are incapable of jumping outside of that range. If they're going through a gate, they don't jump in at a range, they arrive on one specific point making PDCs all the more powerful.

By the time their weapons are back online, you've pumped them full of holes :P

Is there a hotkey to make new task groups or delete current ones? The buttons are just barely past the bottom of my screen, even with the reduced height windows option on.  Id rather not get another program to resize stuff if I can avoid it..

alt-N and alt-D, and you can create a new one by detaching a ship from a TG. The detach button is a little higher than the create and delete ones.

And here's how I plan on keeping invaders from getting through my jump points.

I like to throw some HPM fighter in the mix and focus them to the ships that have actives readings, after a jump with shields down those are very effective in blinding them further.

also, the more the enemy ecm the better, more trget for the HPM to hit  :P

There is none. But if you click system map (same height as detach ship), and than go back the task group window you can press tab three times and than press enter and you'll be able to rename you TG.

Thanks :D I haven't had to ask this many questions about a game since I started Dwarf Fortress.. and most of those questions were answered by reading the DF Wiki.

I do, its helped me out quite a bit already, but there are plenty of things it doesn't explain.

They're going to be out of range long before their weapons come online. 320,000km range means you get one shot and that's it (and given how Aurora detection works, you likely wont even get the one unless you have a scout on the far side of the point). At point blank range that will probably destroy several ships, but any further out and they'll get out of range with only a few dents.

Then they get to 3 million kilometers or so and start launching missiles at the base.

My Geology Team has a score of over 200, yet they usually stop finding stuff on planets after just 2 or 3 finds. Am i just unlucky or should i aim to make Teams with a score of 140-160?
