I've got a magma pipe, flux, a brook, tons of bauxite, interesting elevation, heavily forested.

But where the goddamn hell is my iron?!

I've done so much exploratory mining, but Armok hates me  >:(

Just wait a few seasons for the goblinite to spawn.

Sometimes you can be unlucky. Regenning the world and embatrking agian on the same place *MIGHT* help. I think veins and clusters are generated at embark, not worldgen, right?

iron doesn't appear everywhere, and while I'm not that knowledgeable in geology, there's some interesting locations that might only have copper or other metals.

One time I had an interesting oceanside location with a magma pipe. No iron to speak of... well, there was ONE little vein that I found, that I literally had to dig an extensive series of tunnels underneath the ocean in order to reach.

Actually, geology generation is so detailed during world gen that if you gen the same world twice, and the minerals would almost be exactly identical.

Yeah, but IIRC that's only for the layer stones; clusters @ veins are generated when the game needs to generate them, which, again IIRC, is why you have to designate the bottom of the entire map before using Reveal.

Now, for a dissertation of DF geology:

Iron will be found mostly in sedimentary layers (limonite, magnetite, hematite.)and igneous extrusive layers (hematite)

Copper can be found anywhere(tetrahedrite), but especially in igneous extrusive areas (native copper) and limestone and marble (malachite).

Tin can be found in Granite (cassiterite). Same with Bismuth (bismuthinite).

Zinc can be found in metamorphic layers (sphalerite).

Nickel can be found in Gabbro (garnierite).

Lead can be found in igneous extrusive, metamorphic, Limestone and Granite layers (galena)

Gold can be found in any igneous layer (native gold).

Silver can be found anywhere (tetrahedrite), but especially in igneous extrusive, metamorpihic and Limestone layers (galena), and especially especially in Granite (galena, native silver, horn silver).

Platinum can be found in Gabbro layers within Olivine clusters, and in sedimentary layers within Magnetite clusters.

Aluminium can be found in igneous extrusive layers.

Coal can be found in Sedimentary areas (bituminous coal, lignite).

Keep this in mind when finding a spot.

Magnetite, limonite, hematite, I'm talking generally here.

I've found good amounts of copper, but that just doesn't cut it for me.

Limestone top layer? Yeah, often in Limestone malachite comes to the fore at the expense of the iron ores.

I think, out of the various fluxes, Chalk is best. Limestone has to deal with Malachite, and Dolomite has huge-ass Talc clusters. Marble also has Malachite, and is metamorphic to boot.

I find the best sites are the ones that span multiple biomes as well as having lots of features.  A lot of times, any single biome will only have two layer classes, and rarely sport much in the way of minerals.  But the cross-biome sites almost always sport a plethora of different minerals.

Of course, when all else fails, look for a desert with a magma pipe.  Unlikely though a find like that is, pretty much every white or black sand desert consists of chalk below the sand (meaning lots of magnetite and platinum to go with your huge layers of flux).

Sucks
Its right at the very top of my mountain.
