Floor Grates

Can dwarves see or fire straight up or straight down through floor grates?

If they're anything like vertical grates then they should. Indeed, I can't see any reason why they shouldn't, but I haven't tested it myself. I always wanted to make tower defenses where the marksdorfs shoot straight down on unsuspecting enemies. Yes, I should go do that...

they can only fire vertical or horizontal and diagonal in the case of bolt going down one Z level , but they can't fire directly downwards or upwards

OK, so they can't fire vertically, but can they see vertically?

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

Of course! I do that all the time, but then they are just vents and not murderholes.

You could have a marksdwarf fire 'straight' down; what Ze Spy means is that if they're standing ON a floor grate they can't fire down through it - but if they're one square south of the grate, they can fire down into it, hitting anything that's below and a little to the north of the grate, for example. Presumably dwarves are so stout that they can't point the crossbows straight down for fear of hitting their bellies.
