Well, do we have magma on this map? if so, we should probably start the magma industry up soon.

There's a fairly obvious obsidian cap just southwest of our fort's location. I don't know what the status of the fort is currently, but when I left off we had a furnace operator, a metalcrafter, and a generic metalsmith, so yes getting magma working could be a good idea.

Regarding actually tapping the magma pipe: the most basic way to do it is to dig right up to the magma pipe wall, then smooth the single tile between you and the pipe, then carve a fortification in it to a) let magma flow through and b) keep fire imps and the like from following. The downside is, done as above, you likely lose the guy that carves the fortification to magma. I've read, and confirmed myself, that the delay that makes the fortification-carver fail to outrun the magma isn't a lack of agility; the dwarf actually spends frames figuring out his pathfinding to whatever next job he chooses, WHILE the magma seeps through the fortification. You can keep him alive by a) enabling both mining and stone detailing on the guy, b) making sure nobody else has mining or stone detailing, c) queueing the fortification-carving job, d) waiting until he starts working on the carving, and then e) assigning a nearby (~10 tiles) tile to be dug out. The instant the carver finishes the fortification and the magma starts flowing, he'll very quickly pathfind to the nearby tile and move towards it, outrunning the magma. (Not bothering with the Mining job and queueing up a stone-smoothing instead of a digging job should work too; I just haven't done it that way.) Granted, you should still do it with an expendable dwarf, but in the past that's worked for me as an easy, safe way to tap a magma pipe.

I'm thinking of linking a drawbridge/important lever to a support that will kill the fortress if my turn ever comes....  8)

The people after me are going to have fun trying to figure out what all these levers do once my turn is done...

I will enjoy pulling EACH and EVERY ONE of them :P
AH!
but what if i make it so if you pull a wrong lever it makes others not work?
well then...Ill have to pull them all AGAIN :P and AGAIN till I find the disabling lever! or I can just link all the levers to random stuff

another mini-update:
A little past the start of winter, I have set up furnace systems so the people after can smith stuff.
Found the river too.  Do not have the inclination to half finish an irrigation system.

I can see the massive number of rock mugs made, but they don't show up to trade away.  They are accessible and unforbidden, but they aren't able to be traded. ???  So I just made crafts and toys.

Prehaps theyre like in bins or barrels or something.

Maybe the dwarves are purposefully hoarding the mugs for their own nefarious purposes.

I hear if you combine them with dwarven syrup you can make rhesus pieces.

Here is my year.  File is here, map is here.

1st Granite 302

Sigh, apparently when my debt to Kethas was called in he didn't mention that he would suddenly dissapear into his chambers and leave me to manage this place.  I will say that dwarf is a mean cards player.

Well, I guess it's time to look up from my lovely mechanics shop and actually see what this yahoo has done so far.

...

Okay, why in the holy god of carp are we WALLED IN?  A few cage traps will take care of any troglodytes or ratmen that may bother us.

Aright, first order of business, get some farming going.
Second order of business, find out the area of that magma pipe outside.

Hold that, second order of business, set up a controllable gate to the outside.
Annd hold that, get kennels up so we can have some war dogs to protect the masons.

15th Granite 302

The hippie elves come today.  Hopefully they'll have something useful instead of three asses worth of cloth.
Nope.  Three asses worth of cloth and a barrel of wine.

23rd Granite 302

Cancelled all the unnecessary repeats and replaced them with job orders.

6th Slate 302

Started digging for the magma.  Sweet sweet magma... mmmm...

10th Slate 302

Got some migrants, crazy bastards coming to this forsaken place.  Fortress count is now 28.

18th Slate 302

One of the migrants, a ranger, was killed by foul ratmen.  They really do smell bad.
A bunch more clumsy oafs fell into the chasm...

5th Felsite 302

Went to have a forge built and guess what wasn't brought along.  AN ANVIL.  Yeah, we can totally make metal goods with no anvil...

9th Felsite 302
The fishery worker has withdrawn from society...
Claimed the craftsdwarf workshop...
And is starting work...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

15th Felsite 302
The fishery worker has made Rulushirtir, a granite ring

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

9th Hematite 302
The humans arrived with hopefully an anvil, which of course they didn't...

24 Hematite 302
An ambush! Oh noes!
Go caravan guards go!
Caught me a gobby!  I now have a test subject

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

19th Galena 302
Finished the gobby pit.  Started designations to find the underground river.

10th Limestone 302
Found the river.  Commencing testing of the gobby pit as well.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Hooray it kills them!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

12th Limestone 302
Yay traders! Yay anvils!

18th Limestone 302
The jeweller has become possessed and is demanding rough gems.  I don't have any, so he can just sit in his sealed cubby until I do.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

16th Sandstone 302
The minors finally unearthed some gems, so the jewler is now working on something.
And created Enkosusan, a perfect amethyst. glee... a pretty stone.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

19th Opal 302
The engraver got a 'mood' today.  Ran right to the craftsdwarf workshop, kicked the poor sod working in there out, grabbed a bunch of rock and started working.  Made Atolozsit, an Alunite toy axe. Yay, another useless artefact.  Although he is now a legendary engraver.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

26th Obsidian 302
Finished my tomb.  For those who read this after me, once I am entombed, pull the south lever, then the north lever, and run really fast.

And it is spring, my debt to Kethas is paid, and I will now sink back into my lovely mechanisms.

Max time is a week, although less is better.
You might want to improve the defences more.  Against wild animals and ambushes what's there works fine, but it won't hold against a siege.

We're playing vanilla, although Kethas and I have the Mayday graphics pack installed.

Hehe. After playing dig deeper, this'll almost feel easy. Save, I could never get used to having so many dorfs.

*shudders* So many idle, but I have no jobs!
