Aye, everyone who complains goes in a huge fit of NERD RAEG about how its not codded the way I want it to be! or it doesn't have the feature I want it to have! and of course this game sucks, why toady gets donations, why don't I get any donations despite not actualy making anything remarkable?! Its unfair!, etc. The fact they spend a considerable ammount of time writing a TL;DR post about how it sucks and how its not worth of their attention, is pretty ironic and amusing.

I do not see how it is unreasonable to expect to be able to eat a cake you own, so I never got that expression.

The implication was that by "keep" them meant keep it down.

Not that babies are useful in any way at all...

Well, as things go natural-born dwarves (as opposed to dirty immigrants) tend to grow up into godlike, legendary creatures. All social skills way into the legendary territory (including the liar skill which only children ever seem to acquire), farming trained way the hell up, all the stats crazy high. When they finally grow up, they are buzzing along so fast they master whatever skill you throw them at in little time at all.

Children are great. The only reason to have immigrants after the first couple years is so you can sift out thinks like weaponsmith or armorsmith, things that are too expensive to train up, or for cheap cannonfodder.

People, of course, aren't so patient with that kind of long-term investment (12 years?! Fuck that!), especially if resources are low. My fortress, however, has a problem with too much food, so I ceased all farming and fishing (Save for Wild Strawberries to brew into wine) and I could probably last with my 101 population for at least a DECADE with the amount of lavish meals I have created (3500!!!). Once the children grow up, we'll see what purpose they'll serve the fortress (Ain't gonna be farming, that's for sure).
