« on: December 07, 2009, 04:07:14 pm »

dwarf fortress will not display.

the music plays, but no visuals. if i press escape and then press down to go to quite game from what would be the start menu, it doesn't do anything.

the game is running though, i just can't see it, or do anything.

this started when i got windows seven, any suggestions?

Apparently Windows 7 sucks.

actually, i can do things, stuff works, i just can't see it.

i was able to skip the intro by pressing the space bar and exit the game through the menus.
it's a display issue, i just don't know what to look for.

I have had windows 7 installed and running with DF for over a week now. More likely than not, its a driver issue. Do you have the latest graphics drivers for your hardware? Are those drivers vista/win 7 compatible?

Well, Not really.
Apparently Windows 7 sucks.
Not even close.

People just do silly things when it comes to having a brand-new shiny OS.
Such as not installing drivers for the video card because the desktop appears to display correctly.
Just because it shows you something does not mean all is well on graphics!

I've had DF running on Windows 7 for almost a month now without any problems.
In fact, my average FPS has increased.

i'm pretty sure i did, getting morrowind to work was also a hassle.
Umm, yeah, you're not "pretty sure".  If you can't remember if you did or not, you didn't.  For all intents and purposes, anyways.

like i said, i had to get the driver for running morrowind.

i'm not a tech-guru or anything but getting the drivers was the fist thing i did when i got my "shiny new OS."

next questions:

does it show an icon in the taskbar?
does it display a window bar?
does it display a black window or a window painted with whatever was behind it?

Well, whatever the problem is, it's not directly caused by Windows 7.
It's something you had installed on XP or Vista or whatever you had before that is no longer installed.
Whether that be graphics drivers or otherwise...

Possibly(?) related: You are running d16, right?

Otherwise, we're going to need a lot more specific information to help you.

I'm not going to spend time debating this, because it's pointless..  But you did not actually say that, you made two separate statements and punctuated them with a comma, in no way tying them together.

From what I can tell, Windows 7 drivers are still getting debugged, which means new ones may have been released since you got yours.  Update them just to be sure.  This has been the cause of the majority of Windows 7 issues, so we're not giving you aimless advice here.

From what I can tell, Morrowind uses DirectX.  DF uses OpenGL.  If a driver update doesn't help, see if you can run any OpenGL apps successfully.

Also, yeah, what version are you using?  If you're not using 40d16, you should get it here.

See if this works -> http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/OpenGL-Geometry-Benchmark-Download-767.html

If it does we can quit nagging you about drivers and get on to the real problem.

Also... try taking a screenshot and putting it on a website so we can see whats going on.

Printscreen and copy it into paint.... or if you have porn downloader running you dont want us to see, use Alt+printscreen and it will only do the application.

Open mspaint, use paste, and save it after pressing either combination. (PNG format works best)

One final thing, there is a log file generated... post the last few lines of that.

See if you get some errors in your error.log...
