we all live in a metal submarine...
« on: November 23, 2009, 01:35:39 pm »

i plan to make a dwarfish submarine made of metal or stone or wood. if i made a tube with which to send down stuff like food and water, would the dwarves be able to do anything useful underwater? how about when submerged in lava?

They'd probably just do their usual dwarven stuff. Drink, eat, sleep.

If you made your submarine big enough, you could have them do actual work in there by building workshops, stockpiles, etc.

Whatever you do, make it yellow. Gold and bismuth bronze and orthoclase.

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

Of course I got the reference.

You think you and Skorpion are the only people who've ever heard a Beatles song?

I never did understand how all our friends could be on board, with many more of them living next door.  Either they are all on board, not or they aren't.

Edit:  fixed incoherency

I was always more worried about what "next door" meant for a submarine.

There is that also.  I figured maybe it was another yellow submarine, so that in fact everyone was on board some yellow submarine, just not this one.  The words still don't quite make sense, though.

This was during the "Interesting" phase of Beatles songs. Of course it was a bit wonky to work out.

But building and submerging a submarine would be... hard, to say the least. I'm not entirely sure how you'd do it.

I am currently working on a dry dock fortress. When each ship is complete, I did out the ground around it and then i have a full wooden ship in the bay.

He's invited people to come along and experience the journey with him (and help him test it out as he goes along). At the end of the day, I don't think his main goal is to sell Dwarf Fortress, its just to create the best game possible.

If a guy on the Dwarf Mode discussion board can drain the ocean just to trap walruses, you can do it for a project like this.

Possibly he meant "all who are on board are our friends"?

It was a calming and happy song at a turbulant time in my life, so I enjoyed it even though it didn't totally make sense.  A lot of the rest of my life made even less sense.   :D
