Unplanned Hermit Fortress
« on: November 15, 2009, 01:15:05 pm »

I decided I wanted to see what else might be fun on the DwarfHeaven map, so searched specifically for the following features:

Aquifer NO
Flux stone YES
Underground river YES
Magma pipe YES
Other features YES

Found a lovely 5x5 spot ina terrifying location.  On embark things seemed okay.  No visible animals aside from those I had brought along, so we set to digging out the fortress.  The underground river turned up nice and quickly.  A little inconvenient considering the digging plans I'd started, but easy to work around.

Wait... maybe I should check the messages...

Oh dear...

Ohhhh dear...

There were 8 pages of this.

The water was a little bit infested...

Just a little...

Quickly swapped over the mining plans

Unfortunately the animals started pouring out in swarms.

My last surviving dorf managed to get a wall up.

Giant eagle!  Yay!

Miasma... and skeletal goats.

So anyway... I now find myself playing hermit fortress without ever quite having meant to.  I now have a named Giant Skeletal Toad on the loose on the surface, having survived about 8-9 escaping undead watery beasts, 3 skeletal goats and having avoided the eagle so far.  Lost all my livestock except one cat and one muskox.

The good news is, the food and booze supplies should last a while, now!

Wish me luck!

Good Luck :D

Ive always wanted to play a Hermit Fortress, however everytime I tried my last remaining dwarf would still somehow find a way to kill himself. ::)

Yay!  Migrants!  Unfortunately they decided to walk past the skeletal giant toad on their way in.  Recruit them all!

Oh dear.  That toad is a bit hardcore.

Things probably could've gone better.

Shortly afterwards, my surviving original peasant died under attack from yet more skeletal goats.  So I am hermitting once again.

I used the dwarf heaven site generator
http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=32682.0

but instead of going to the embark site on that thread, I searched for desired location with the following specs...

That there is the site I went to.  Exact area.

Have fun!  ;D

The plane of Omen.

I'm not sure what we're looking at here. But I think it's supernatural  :-[

If this isn't challenging enough for you, when you reclaim the site the underground brook creatures will be respawned... but any existing brook creatures from before will still be there.

For best results, abandon and reclaim several times in a row before getting down to business. :)

Every time I plan a hermit fortress the hermit ends up going insane because I crushed his friends to death with a microcline cave-in.

Three?  Up from one? (twice)  I'd say you're doing quite well.  Maybe with enough sacrifices to Armok, he'll help you kill that named skeletal giant frog.  Good luck.

Yeah, for some reason no matter how quickly the dorfs die, the homelands keep on sending more.  Most don't make it in the door before they get eaten by SOMETHING.  Last lot fell prey mostly to a giant skeletal eagle, although the toad got a couple too.

I'm starting to wonder about the dorfs back home, actually.  Are they just shipping al the nutjobs and/or criminals off on us to get rid of them?  Political coup?  What?  Why would you send 8 new dorfs to a fortress worth bugger-all when 17 dorfs died there within the space of 18 months?
