Alone in the world.
« on: November 02, 2009, 11:57:11 am »

EDIT:

Update -

It's been 15 years, and the population (by birthing) has hit 24, and my first artifact came... to a dwarf who was already legendary in that skill.

These dwarves are the only ones here, the fortress wealth is above 300k (can't tell specifically, no appraiser), but the biggest threat is hoary marmots.

Original post:
Started a new world with the following parameters:
33x33 size
very mountainous
lots of caves
max volcanism

On embark, I found myself in a nice little area with nothing other than a single giant eagle to bother me (and it hasn't bothered me).
However, the dwarves started on a peak that was too small for a wagon. I thus had no wagon... but I did have everything I brought with me (including the requisite draft animals).

I get settled in with the original 7, and notice that no dwarven caravan came in the fall.  ???

Next spring, no elves. Summer, no humans. Fall, no dwarves. I check the civs screen and see none. I haven't even seen a single kobold or goblin.

I have gotten no migrants for five years now, and am contemplating trying to get these dwarves to breed to get my pop #s up.

Thankfully, my food supplies are self-sustaining and nearly everyone is legendary at something. One death to magma (it moved much faster than I expected it to).

Anyone else notice this quirk?

It might be that the area you started in has no access to any other civs, probably blocked off by a mountain range or an ocean or such.
You can check on embark by pressing the Tilde (?) key, but the only way for you to check now would be to copy DF, abandon on the copy then reclaim and see if you have access to any other civ.

In completely unrelated news, when I refreshed this page before posting here, this thread title came up as

I'm not entirely sure what it is, but I'm guessing the webcode for the forums or something like that. Somewhat odd looking.

It is possible that you aren't linked to certain civilisations

When you choose your starting location , if you TAB once or twice - it'll show you the list of civilisations that you have acess to.

If you started off in the middle of a mountain range, I doubt anyone can reach you.

You should be guaranteed a dwarf caravan, even on an island or otherwise impossible to reach location.  Unless your dwarf civ died out in world gen and doesn't have any cities?  Check legends...

If the dwarves aren't coming, odds are the civ was wiped out. It's rare, as I believe the world gen stops when the dwarves die out, but it has been reported before. Possibly the dwarves are wiped out after world gen stops, avoiding the protections against it.

As for the lack of elves and humans, it's common. They just can't reach you. Sorry dude, perfect mountain not so perfect after all.

I think I put too many caves in this map >.>;

"Waxchanneled" is my fortress. I think we're the only dwarves here... and I think we colonized the moon.

As they say in Outpost - "Extinction is not an option."

Unless that's gray Mountainhall is not yours, you're not alone in this world.

And those aren't caves, they're craters.

I had a map inexplicably unable to bring dwarves, and on that map my wagon had been crashed into the mountainside. It may be worthwhile for people to test this to see if starting with no wagon affects your incoming caravans.

Although in my case it was no dwarves. I got human and elven caravans just fine.

+1 baby. If I can get another pair, I think I can eventually get the population up.

I don't know if this is possible, but you may want to mod the dwarves to become adults much earlier, say at 5 years instead of 12. Otherwise you'll be waiting a VERY long time before you have more than 7 or fewer working dwarves.

Modding the growth time might require a regen though, I'm never sure.

I'm torn between trying to birth my way up with these dwarves or abandoning and coming back for a reclaim.

Growth should be moddable without a regen. I suggest making it one year just to confirm it though.

You can also savescum and see if the reclaim has more than 7 dwarves before deciding. It kinda sucks that you're already short the magma death.

On a reclaim, it looked like there were 30 or so dwarves available (from where, I don't know).

For grins, I flipped the bit that controls multiple births from "Rare" to "Common".

It seemed prudent, in light of my inability to find immigrants.
