Spoilers! : My very first HFS... no Military.
« on: October 31, 2009, 07:24:54 pm »

Just now, I struck Adamantine for the very first time! This has never happened to me before.

It's on a really odd map... plain vanilla DF (except for the Mayday GFX mod), lots of ore, flux, sand, trees and fresh water; but no Magma, no nasty biomes, no dangerous creatures, no contact with either the Hippies or the Goblins, no sieges, no baby-snatchers, no thieves... no nothing. Just peaceful growth. I'm up to 66 Dwarves, mostly useless.

Which means... I have no Military. Not even a little kid with a slingshot. Oh, wait... I've got 20 or 30 Wardogs. That's it.

I didn't mine any of it out, I just backed off and walled off that corridor at a point about 25 tiles back. Not sure if that'll do any good... maybe I should channel out the floor of the passage as well.

Suggestions? I'm sure someone will advise me to "have fun".

You will be quite funless if you don't dig it out.

Could I have the map gen data? It sounds like a fun place to start at.

You do not understand the ways of Toady One. He is not a business, he's just a guy trying to make a fun game. He's invited people to come along and experience the journey with him (and help him test it out as he goes along). At the end of the day, I don't think his main goal is to sell Dwarf Fortress, its just to create the best game possible.

Thank God for that... time to start making some Armor and weapons... I've got lots of useless Dwarves to draft.

Sure... how do I do that?

Make a copy of that region in your saved data. Abandon the fortress. Start a new game, go to legends and export gen data (something to that affect... I forgot the actual wording...). It should give you a text file in the main DF folder. Just open and put that in a

OK... here's the data:

... not sure just where I built it, but it shows up in the Legends as:

148 Noramingiz "Relievedceiling" a mountain fortress

One clue to finding it on the map is that it's temperate (but the ponds dry out in summer) with no contact with the Elves or the Goblins. Yellow Sand, Limestone and Diorite layers.

I'll see if I can find the abandoned site in Fortress mode.

EDIT: Found it! It's the six-wide, four-high area spanning the stream. I found the fun stuff west of the stream.

Use the pretty blue stones to make pretty blue armour and weapons. THEN you can take on the funhouse.

You all do know that we everytime we gen a world in DF, a new universe is created somewhere, and everytime we delete a save we kill a whole world?
Aye, we are Armok, god of blood, evil, villager gutting, fortress building, legend making and elf thongs.

Breaking in from the top level should be relatively safe if you wall off the breakage soon enough. Your further tactic depends on the type of clowns, but cave-ining the whole thing is always an option if you got no military. You can mine adamantine w/out clearing out the pit as well, since veins span long away from the chamber.

Oh... one other little detail regarding world-gen and embarking:

For some odd reason, I started without a wagon. Not sure why, since there's LOTS of level ground around, but my Dwarves spawned half-way up the mountain, without a wagon. Their junk was just strewn around over the nearby tiles. It was all there, though.

Maybe they just para-dropped in?

The game likes to put you in the center of the area.  If that is a steep slope, oh well.   :D

You're lucky none of your dwarves got broken up into little pieces and their contents strewn around!

(That doesn't actually happen until the wild hippos get to them)

The quickest strike I ever had, was the third tile I dug out on the map.

Bet the king wasn't too happy about having to start off in 3x3 soil quarters!

Nah, just widen the strike a little and smooth and he will be happy with room value.  It is the chests that he wants that will get you.
