Hardwar - There's a war going on out there, and it aint easy
« on: October 20, 2009, 02:05:57 pm »

In the city of Misplace Optimism on the barren moon of Titan, life is shit, and everyone wants off. You're at least one step better off than most of the sad sacks slaving away on this rock, because you've got yourself a Moth (a sort of flying car/tank/hovercraft). That means you can trade, you can fight, you can work, and you can save. But it doesn't mean life is going to be easy. In Misplaced Optimism, nothing is ever easy.

First, there's the pirates. Can't barely step outside before you run into someone who's decided your stuff would look a lot nicer in their hold. Fortunately, the security forces provide a little protection in the city proper - unfortunately, the tunnels that connect the different districts are pretty much unpatrolled. Of course, you make a wrong move, insult the wrong person, your gonna wind up on the shit list of those same security firms - remember that the corps aren't working for you, they're working for themselves. If you get in the way, you become a target.

So what are you going to do? Scavenge the wrecks of the corp conflicts? Scavenge the unwitting dupes YOU wreck? Work for the strained and corrupt police forces that provide some semblance of stability in this hellhole? Try to work your way up trading commodities, or get a job with one of the corps? Maybe you'll save up some cash and open your own hangar. Maybe you'll do it all, and more. Whatever you do, your goal is simple - get out of here. It wont be cheap. It wont be easy. But if your smart, and careful, and lucky, you just might make it.

Ok, that was fun, now technical stuff-
1-8 players per world at any given time.
Overall plot you can discover pieces to as you play. (I never actually paid much attention to this)
Lots of different factions and rivals to side with or work against.
Lots of different Moths and equipment.
Buy hangars to store extra ships and equipment.

Overall SUPER FUN game. You should all play.

Every game is moddable. It's just how hard you're willing to work to do it. ;)

So, eh...where could I easily obtain a (legal?) copy of this game?

Well the site I linked should have everything you need to get the game working, but I guess I'll walk those who need it through it.

First option - buy the game, or order it from someone, or get the iso. This site has details on all that: http://zedo.hardwar.org.uk/gethardwar.htm

Or you can use the Underdogs site I listed above, specifically the following page: http://www.hotud.org/component/content/article/46-simulation/46/23923

I think (not sure) thats just the demo, but the demo can be patched to the full version (which one of those links should explain to you)

I, thankfully, have a cd so I dont have to mess with finding an ISO or patching demos, but if anyone does get it working that way, we should play together some time.

I've had this game on my computer for years, it's pretty cool.
I have the underdogs version, the patching is easy, just follow the instructions.

Used to play the crap out of this. As a word of warning... Many of the patches are great, and significantly improve gameplay(A narcotics factory? In my hangar? Sweet!).

However... One of them destroys the economy. I think the fifth one or somesuch. Avoid, unless you like fighting merchants/pirates who are stuck in a queue for the weapons shop.

This game is finicky to get running in XP. You're probably out of luck. Perhaps Windows 7 will have better backward compatibility. If not, you choose between new software or old when you pick an OS.

That said, you might try running it in DOSBox or some other OS emulator. I have no clue whether this will work.

/summons dark magiks to resurrect this thread from times of yore/

open source remake anyone?

http://www.hardwar.org/

not finished, but development is ongoing. I'd love to see this released...

I still have the old disks - the Warp Records soundtrack was magnificent.

Woooh, hope it goes through! Would love to be able to see this spring back to life - the original was intended very much as a multiplayer game, and it would be awesome if there were enough people playing it again to make that possible. ^_^
