Firefly got canceled by Fox after just 14 or so episodes. After they kept screwing around with the release order and schedule so no one could really watch it the way they were supposed to.

There's a joke I heard once that Joss Wheadon actually oversold it to the FOX bigwigs by calling it an epic story full of redemption, sacrifice, romance, etc. Instead, he should have simply said "space cowboys with a space hooker" and we'd have had several seasons with a spin-off or two.

IMO, it's probably for the best that it didn't go on for a second season. They should have completed the first, but beyond that, the show's universe is kind of limited without entirely changing the feel of it Had it gone on for much more than a full season, it likely wouldn't have felt anything like Firefly by the end of it. Just look at Serenity for an example of that.
